As someone deeply rooted in the scientific realm, I find astrology to be an intriguing yet elusive subject. Despite the lack of empirical evidence to substantiate astrology as a “real” science, many individuals, including myself, feel a certain pull toward its mysteries. Personally, I often find myself overwhelmed when the discussion shifts beyond my basic understanding of my zodiac sign—I’m a Cancer, if you’re curious. When terms like “rising sign” or “fourth house” are introduced, my confusion often escalates, leading me to nod along, even as I grapple with the complexities of this ancient practice.
Understanding the Roots of Skepticism Toward Astrology
In spite of my background in medicine, I maintain an open mind towards the myriad mysteries of the universe. I believe that scientists, myself included, can sometimes exhibit a level of overconfidence when dismissing concepts simply because they seem too mystical or “woowoo.” Furthermore, the prevalence of misinformation surrounding astrology is comparable to the misconceptions that exist about popular diets like keto or alternative therapies like acupuncture. My initial perception of astrology involved a stereotypical image of a gypsy fortune teller, complete with a crystal ball, predicting vague misfortunes and encounters. Admittedly, that portrayal felt overwhelmingly mystical and far-fetched for me.
One particular quote from the renowned Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung resonated with me deeply, perhaps due to its wine analogy:
“We are born at a given moment, in a given place, and like vintage years of wine, we have the qualities of the year and of the season in which we are born.”
This perspective prompts the question: why wouldn’t the positions of the stars and planets at the time of our birth have significance? Just because we lack understanding of the mechanisms by which celestial bodies might influence our personalities does not negate the possibility of their impact. At the age of 45, I decided to explore this idea further by having my astrological chart analyzed for the first time. The experience was enlightening! Contrary to my expectations, there were no crystal balls or ominous predictions. I found my birth certificate to confirm my exact birth time and reached out to a highly recommended astrologer, rather than relying on internet searches—a wise decision based on the power of personal recommendations.
Insights Gained from My Astrological Reading
Engaging with a skilled astrologer proved to be an enlightening experience focused on gaining insights into the unique lens through which I perceive the world. This exploration illuminated some of the reasons behind my thoughts and reactions, as well as how others view my character. For me, the session provided valuable reflections on the choices I’ve made throughout my life, instilling the courage to chase my aspirations without hesitation. The astrologer mentioned that I had been a medicine woman in previous lives and that I am currently expanding my capabilities in this lifetime. Hearing her describe me as “magnificent,” a compliment I often struggle to accept, left me with a renewed sense of purpose. I departed the session reassured that I possess meaningful work to accomplish in this lifetime, equipped with the necessary skills, even on days filled with self-doubt.
Evaluating the Validity of Astrological Insights
Whether her insights are entirely accurate remains uncertain, but I found the experience to hold as much value as various forms of talk therapy I have undergone. It has enriched my ongoing journey of self-discovery, adding layers of understanding that I previously lacked. If you’ve been contemplating a consultation with an astrologer and have access to reliable recommendations, I wholeheartedly endorse the experience. Much like any form of self-exploration, the key lies in approaching the process with an open mind, listening without judgment, and expanding upon the insights that resonate with you, while not becoming too distracted by those that don’t.
This year has been one of astrological exploration for me, coinciding with the growing popularity of astrology. In light of this newfound interest, I’ve compiled a cosmically-inspired gift guide to enhance your holiday shopping experience. This guide revolves around sun signs, often referred to as zodiac signs. According to Joanna Woolfolk in “The Only Astrology Book You’ll Ever Need,” your sun sign reflects the broad aspects of your personality. Although the sun sign constitutes just one facet of our complex personalities, it can be easily identified by knowing someone’s birthday. So, grab your birthday calendar and indulge in a little starry fun while planning your holiday gifts this year!
With love and a brand new moon from us to you,
