Cherish Your Mother with Thoughtful Wishes
As Mother’s Day approaches, it’s essential to express your heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful women in our lives. This is the perfect opportunity to tell our mothers just how much we love and appreciate them.
Unlike previous years, where we were constantly reminded of how to honor our mothers, the essence of this day has shifted. At PAIRFUM, we began to ponder, “What do mothers genuinely desire on Mother’s Day?” Is it just the Happy Mother’s Day wishes, or is there something deeper?
The answer is simple yet universal, regardless of whom we asked or where they lived; mothers long for the chance to meet, hug, and kiss their children. These are the little things we often take for granted, especially in the wake of the pandemic and the lockdowns.
In previous years, we posed the question, “What do mothers want for Mother’s Day?” and received a plethora of extravagant suggestions like “a two-week, all-expenses-paid holiday in Bali,” “a weekend at an exclusive spa,” or “a week skiing at a top resort.” While these ideas sound idyllic, they seem even more appealing now, given the constraints of travel.
However, as we came back to reality, it became clear that most children, regardless of age, do not have that kind of money in their piggy banks. We also realized that we rarely ask our mothers what they truly want. While mothers are excellent at suggesting gifts for us, they seldom express their desires for themselves.
The Year of Connection: Meet, Hug & Kiss
This year, many mothers worldwide have had a clear desire: to meet, hug, and kiss their children. For young families or those with children still living at home, this is typically not an issue. However, for many families where children have flown the nest, this connection is impossible.
Being able to meet up or visit is the number one wish. Simply sending a Happy Mother’s Day wish or card cannot replace the warmth of a hug. On one hand, we have mothers longing to be with their children, and on the other, many mothers have had even less time for themselves due to closed schools and other responsibilities.
As in previous years, the answers we received varied depending on the age group of the children:
- Mothers of young children often desire ‘time for themselves’.
- Mothers of teenagers appreciate a little more help around the house, along with genuine phrases like, “Is there anything I can do to help you, Mom?” or “I really appreciate all the hard work you do for me, Mom.”
Another common wish was for a long, leisurely ‘morning in bed’—a lie-in followed by a soothing soak in the bath, allowing them to take their time in choosing what to wear and whether to do their makeup or not.
‘Gift giving’ also sparked interesting discussions related to the age of the children:
- Moms of younger children would cherish receiving something handmade or personal.
- Moms of teenagers would relish a thoughtful act, like breakfast in bed (preferably followed by leaving the kitchen in immaculate condition, regardless of its initial state).

Insights from a Mother’s Day Survey
A recent poll conducted by Mumsnet found that 85% of mothers wished for more than just an hour of ‘me-time’ on Mother’s Day, a sentiment echoed by mothers of both young and older children. Unfortunately, when asked about their experiences from last year, most mothers reported that they didn’t get their wish, with three-quarters not even receiving a full hour of solitude.
Similar to our smaller poll, ‘lie-ins’ topped the Mother’s Day wish list, with 92% hoping for some extra rest. Sadly, many expressed disappointment, as over half (58%) of mothers were awake before 8 a.m. on that day.
The survey also revealed that ‘breakfast in bed’ was not a guarantee; 53% of mothers reported making it for themselves last year, despite hoping or hinting that their partners or children would take the initiative.
It doesn’t stop there; not all mothers received a day off from their usual household tasks. When asked about the chores they tackled on Mother’s Day, 62% said they cooked, 58% did laundry, nearly half (49%) cleaned, and 11% even took out the trash (which, let’s be honest, is a bit much).
When it came to gift-giving, something homemade or personal topped the wish list, with 37% of moms saying they would love a gift made by their children, and almost a fifth (18%) expressing a desire for something personalized, like a mug or keyring featuring their kids’ photos or footprints.
In contrast to our smaller survey, Mumsnet found that only two-thirds of mothers admitted to enjoying Mother’s Day. This raises the question of whether mothers simply lack the heart to voice their true feelings.
We resonate with the sentiments expressed by Mumsnet CEO Justine Roberts: “There is considerable pressure on mothers to be selfless, making it challenging for them to articulate their desires, especially when it comes to asking their early-rising children to take their burnt toast elsewhere.”
This is especially poignant when considering the intent, planning, and excitement behind such gestures. In retrospect, those Mother’s Day mornings may not be remembered for the sleep deprivation or the slightly messy trays but for the concentration on their faces as they present their gifts with great pride. What mother wouldn’t appreciate a compliment for that half-filled cup of lukewarm coffee?
There may be exceptions to the rule, as I mentioned earlier, but all wonderful mothers often find it’s best to keep their truths to themselves or save them for another time.
That said, this is not meant to excuse fathers, partners, or children from showing appreciation to the incredible woman in their lives. Based on the responses we received, it’s clear that on this day, you should not only do something special for your mom but also refrain from expecting her to handle her usual responsibilities.
If your mother desires some free time, now is the perfect opportunity to plan how to grant her that much-needed respite, in addition to all the Happy Mother’s Day wishes, cards, and cups of tea.
It’s remarkable how we come to value the simple pleasures in life when they are scarce. The consistent theme is that mothers around the globe never seem to have enough time, especially ‘free time for themselves.’
So, this Mother’s Day, take the moment to ask your mom: “What do you want, really, really want?” You might be surprised by her answer.
We invite you to share your mother’s response and how you fulfilled her wish.

Emotional Happy Mother’s Day Poems to Share
For All Those Times!
For all those moments you lifted me up,
When you sent me off with your heartfelt luck.
You tied my laces and wiped my tears,
Made my lunch and calmed my fears.
Dropping me off at school, waiting for the final bell,
You stood by the yard wall, the love I could tell.
For the times I was wrong but so sure I was right,
When I was ill, you stayed by my side all night.
For the times we clashed and I thought I’d roam,
I knew you’d be sad, left all alone.
You asked, “Where are you going?” I said I didn’t know,
So you suggested I delay my departure, maybe until I was ten or so.
When I ventured away all on my own,
It felt safe knowing you were there at home.
When I had my first crush, growing taller than you,
You were stern yet forgiving, steadfast and true.
For the times you placed my needs above your own,
To the day I realized you’d be my lifelong friend.
For all those moments and countless more,
I want to say “Thank You, I love You, Amore.”

A Mother’s Love
A mother’s love is something
that no words can define,
It is built on deep devotion
and sacrifices intertwined.
It’s endless and unselfish,
and forever will remain,
For nothing can diminish it,
or take that love away.
It’s patient and forgiving
when others turn away,
And it never fails or falters,
even when hearts feel dismay.
It believes beyond believing
when the world seems to condemn,
And it glows with the beauty
of the rarest, brightest gems.
It’s beyond explanation,
it defies all reason,
And remains a secret
like the mysteries of creation.
A miracle of many colors
that man cannot comprehend,
And another wondrous evidence
of God’s tender guiding hand.

To My Mother
Because I feel that in the Heavens above,
The angels whispering to one another,
Can find, among their burning terms of love,
None so devotional as that of “Mother,”
Therefore by that dear name I’ve long called you —
You, who are more than a mother unto me,
And fill my heart of hearts, where Death has installed you
In setting my Virginia’s spirit free.
My mother — my own mother, who passed away early,
Was but the mother of myself; but you
Are mother to the one I cherished dearly,
And thus are dearer than the mother I once knew
By that infinity with which my wife
Was dearer to my soul than its very life.
(by Edgar Allan Poe)

Mother O’ Mine
If I were hanged on the highest hill,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose love would follow me still,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
If I were drowned in the deepest sea,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose tears would come down to me,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
If I were damned of body and soul,
I know whose prayers would make me whole,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
(by Rudyard Kipling)
