For decades, bounce houses have been a fun but somewhat frumpy party staple, splattered in unattractive colors and themes. Inflate San Diego is flipping that idea on its head.
“The days of bright, primary-colored rentals that distract from the party theme and event ambiance are long gone,” said co-owner Colette Naylor, who opened Inflate San Diego with her fiance, Max McSparran, last year.
The company is an offshoot of Inflate Forty-Eight, a licensing concept that has so far spawned 17 upscale bounce-house businesses in 11 states. Naylor and McSparran started their San Diego business after watching their friends, Jack and Julie Neilsen, operate an Inflate Forty-Eight in Arizona. The independently owned businesses aren’t franchises; owners simply pay a one-time licensing fee and yearly renewal fee.
“Max and I had always known we wanted to start something of our own but could never pinpoint exactly what that might be,” Naylor said. “We knew a part-time side hustle was in the cards for us. What we didn’t expect was just how big that side hustle would become.”
Focused on modern bounce houses, Inflate’s most popular rentals are all white, making it easier to match the event’s color scheme/aesthetic. Rentals in pink, tan, blue, peach, black and other colors are also offered.
Another unique element is their three-sided shape, with the front fully open. That encourages kids wary of enclosed bounce houses to give it try and makes it easier for parents to watch their kids, Naylor said.
The fun isn’t limited to kids’ parties; the bounce houses are increasingly being rented for all kinds of events, including weddings.
“Modern bounce houses have really become the cool thing for any event,” Naylor said. “We saw the opportunity to elevate not only events but the bounce house business in general.”
