Quick Overview of the Beauty Works Aeris Hair Dryer

Beauty Works has established a reputation for its exceptional styling wands, wavers, and curlers. However, with the introduction of the Aeris, the well-known British brand ventures into the competitive hair dryer market for the first time. Named after the Latin word for “air,” the Aeris is designed to deliver rapid drying capabilities through its “precise high-velocity airflow.” This innovative dryer utilizes advanced ionic technology to achieve a smooth, frizz-free finish while minimizing hair breakage. Additionally, it features a digital temperature display for enhanced user experience.

During our testing phase, we found that while the dryer didn’t completely fulfill the performance claims made by Beauty Works, it still showcased impressive drying speeds that preserved the hair’s volume and bounce. Instead of an entirely frizz-free finish, we noted a significant reduction in flyaways, a rarity for our typically curly hair. This ability to maintain hair integrity during drying makes the Aeris a noteworthy contender in the hair dryer segment.

One of the standout features of this model is its digital display. While it may seem like an appealing addition, it feels somewhat unnecessary. Although it’s intriguing to monitor the temperatures reached across different settings, the lack of customization options makes it less valuable than initially suggested in Beauty Works’ marketing materials. After using the dryer a few times, we found ourselves paying little attention to this feature.

While the Aeris may not win any awards for aesthetics—its industrial shape somewhat conflicts with its elegant white and gold finish—it is a lightweight and well-balanced drying tool. This design factor contributes to a comfortable user experience, making it a suitable choice for travel.

The Aeris dryer comes equipped with magnetic attachments, including a Styling Concentrator and a Smoothing Nozzle, which are incredibly easy to attach and detach. These attachments allow for creative styling variations while using the dryer. Although the diffuser is sold separately, it performs adequately; however, its overall shape and positioning when attached can make it somewhat cumbersome to handle.

The Aeris is particularly advantageous for individuals pressed for time, seeking to achieve a salon-quality finish with minimal effort. It is especially beneficial for those with unruly hair who often struggle to attain smoothness with conventional hair dryers.

Price and Availability of the Beauty Works Aeris Hair Dryer

    • List price: £180/$260/AU$315

Even though the Beauty Works Aeris hair dryer is a recent launch, which can often limit its availability, it is widely sold through Beauty Works’ official website (opens in new tab) and various third-party retailers. Thanks to international shipping options, the Aeris is available for purchase in over 190 countries worldwide. In the UK, it can also be found at popular retailers such as Lookfantastic (opens in new tab), ASOS (opens in new tab), and Feelunique (opens in new tab).

With a price tag of £180/$260/AU$315, the Aeris not only stands as the most expensive hair tool offered by Beauty Works but also ranks among the pricier hair dryers available on the market. It costs three times more than mid-range models from brands like BaByliss, especially their PRO range, and is comparable to some of the high-end options featured in our best hair dryers guide. For instance, the £179/$279/AU$330 GHD Helios is in the same price range, whereas Dyson’s £349.99/$429.99/AU$599.99 Supersonic dryer is approximately double the Aeris’s price.

To justify this relatively high price point, Beauty Works emphasizes that the Aeris’ 1200W brushless digital motor dries hair six times faster than traditional hair dryers. Moreover, it generates ten times the number of ions compared to ordinary ionic dryers, enhancing the drying efficiency. This quicker drying time aims to minimize heat damage to the hair, while the increased ion output contributes to smoother hair and reduced frizz.

In addition to these impressive features, the Beauty Works Aeris comes equipped with a digital display that claims to offer customized temperature control. However, we quickly found this feature to be somewhat gimmicky. The Aeris is also remarkably lightweight, packing advanced technology into a device that weighs merely 300g.

Currently, the Aeris is available in a single color option – a stylish white and gold combination. It is bundled with two magnetic attachments: a Smoothing Nozzle and a Styling Concentrator; a diffuser is available for a separate purchase priced at £25/$37/AU$44.

    Price and Availability Score: 3 / 5

Exploring the Design of the Beauty Works Aeris Hair Dryer

    • Lightweight and well-balanced design for comfortable usage
    • Industrial design aesthetic may not appeal to everyone
    • Digital display provides precise temperature readouts

The design of the Beauty Works Aeris diverges from the traditional aesthetic commonly found in hair dryers, presenting a more industrial appearance that favors straight, sleek lines over curvy shapes. Our initial impression likened it to a power drill more than a hair dryer, particularly with the open-motor design positioned at the rear of the barrel, which strongly emphasizes this industrial flair. This stands in stark contrast to its elegant white and gold color scheme, creating a unique but somewhat conflicting look. The included attachments leverage heat shield technology, allowing for easy swapping without waiting for them to cool down.

In terms of dimensions, the Aeris is compact and user-friendly. It features an 8ft (3m) cable, a standard length for most styling tools today. The barrel measures 7.5 inches (19cm), extending to 9.5 inches (24cm) when the nozzles are magnetically attached, and the handle measures 4.75 inches (10.5cm) long. Surprisingly, the ratio of barrel to handle does not compromise the balance during styling, making the Aeris feel well-balanced. Weighing in at 10.5oz (300g), it significantly outperforms other dryers we’ve tested, like the 1lb 11oz (780g) GHD Helios and the 1lb 3oz (560g) Dyson Supersonic, ensuring comfort during prolonged use and convenience for travel.

The slim handle, with a circumference of 4.5 inches (10.5cm), is designed for easy gripping and maneuverability. The handle features a power button, speed control, and a temperature control button. To turn on the Aeris, you must press and hold the power button for approximately three seconds. You can then cycle through three speed settings (gentle, medium, and fast) and four temperature settings (Cool, Low, Medium, and High).

These buttons are strategically placed to allow easy adjustment while styling, minimizing the risk of accidental changes mid-dry. A cool shot button is also conveniently located on the underside of the handle, which adds an additional temperature setting, bringing the total to five. You can conveniently check the exact temperature of your chosen setting via the digital display situated on the top of the barrel; however, despite being an interesting feature, it tends to feel more like a gimmick.

Using the Aeris can require some trial and error as you identify the speed and temperature settings that best suit your hair type and desired style. Thankfully, the Aeris includes an Intelligent Memory feature that remembers your previous settings each time you switch it on. For those with fine and fragile hair types, it’s advisable to use the Low, 140°F / 60℃ setting. Normal-fine hair types can benefit from the Medium, 194°F / 90℃ setting, while coarse or resistant hair types typically achieve better results with the High, 248°F / 120℃ setting. The Cool setting operates at room temperature and is suitable for all hair types.

The brushless motor, located at the rear of the barrel, is covered by a detachable vent. Beauty Works claims that this motor is self-cleaning, but since it can be removed, you also have the option to manually clear any dust or hair that may accumulate, as it could potentially affect the dryer’s performance.

One significant distinction between the brushed motors found in older, less expensive hair dryers and the Aeris’s brushless motor is that the latter is electronically driven rather than mechanically driven. This upgrade makes brushless motors more energy-efficient, powerful, and quieter during operation, while also enhancing their longevity compared to brushed models. In fact, the Aeris ranks among the quietest hair dryers we’ve encountered; we could even hear our music playing during styling, which is quite rare.

In terms of ionic benefits, the front of the Aeris barrel is coated with a circular metal netting that generates between 30 and 50 million negative ions as it heats. These ions naturally adhere to the positive charge of each hair follicle, effectively reducing static and frizz while ensuring a sleek finish.

    Design Score: 3 /5

Evaluating the Performance of the Beauty Works Aeris Hair Dryer

    • Fast drying speeds that preserve hair volume
    • Delivers smooth, reduced frizz finishes
    • Diffuser attachment is awkward to handle

With the numerous promises made by Beauty Works regarding drying speed, customizable temperature controls, and innovative ionic technology, our expectations were quite high. Fortunately, we were not left disappointed.

In our tests, when rough drying fine, shoulder-length hair directly from the shower, it transitioned from wet to dry in an average of 2 minutes and 3 seconds. This drying time is three seconds quicker than the average drying time recorded with the Dyson Supersonic and nearly a minute faster than the GHD Air. However, it was 16 seconds slower than the GHD Helios. Naturally, if you have longer, thicker hair, the drying time may increase.

The drying speed is even more remarkable when comparing the Aeris with less expensive models, which in our experience can take anywhere from 4 to 7 minutes to dry hair, depending on the device. While it may not fully deliver on the promised 6x faster drying speed, it is undoubtedly a rapid dryer. If you’re transitioning from more affordable models, you’ll notice a substantial time-saving when using the Aeris.

When using the Aeris’ Styling Concentrator and Smoothing Nozzles to style while drying, the total drying time increased slightly to an average of 3 minutes and 8 seconds—an increase worth noting, but not significant.
