THUNDER BAY – Following a two-year hiatus due to COVID concerns, the Jamaica Dental Mission has restarted. This past month, the team from Sovereign Dental in Thunder Bay volunteered at the site in Kew Park, which is a rural town in the Parish of Westmoreland, Jamaica.
The goal of Jamaica Dental Mission is to provide access to dental care and services to individuals from underserved populations, and to promote oral literacy. They aim to develop community relationships while also providing educational and cultural experiences for volunteers.
Sovereign Dental’s Dr. Derval Clarke hails from Jamaica, and has practiced dentistry in Northwestern Ontario for over nine years. He and his team from Sovereign Dental visited Jamaica from July 17th to 24th, and they had the opportunity to serve over 250 patients at the clinic .
Says Dr. Clarke; “Myself and the team at Sovereign Dental were so pleased to be able to return to Jamaica to rejoin the mission after two years of COVID restrictions prevented us from volunteering. Being from Jamaica myself, it was such a meaningful experience to be able to return home and provide services to individuals from my country.”
Four members of Sovereign Dental staff volunteered for the mission, including Dr. Clarke, Pediatric Dentist Dr. Martesia Marshall of the United States, as well as Kiran and Kateryna – dentists from India and Ukraine, respectively. Both Kiran and Kateryna practiced dentistry in their home countries, and are currently studying to become certified in Canada.
Through the Jamaica Dental Mission, the team from Sovereign Dental provided various types of care to patients, such as denture repairs, root canals, and preventative oral care. They worked together with local oral health care providers and other volunteers to improve the oral wellbeing of local individuals.
