In the spring of 2017, just before my 44th birthday, I gazed into the mirror and noticed the unmistakable gleam of silver roots beginning to peek through at my temples. A heavy sigh escaped me as I recalled my last appointment in the salon chair just three weeks prior, where I was covered in harsh chemicals. The image of my mother, just a week before her passing, resurfaced in my mind—she was 64, proudly displaying her short, post-chemotherapy, salt-and-pepper hair for the first time, and she softly joked, “you’ve waited an awfully long time to see me with gray hair.” This poignant memory faded, replaced by a resolute thought: I no longer wanted to continue this cycle.

However, clarity quickly gave way to a whirlwind of anxious thoughts racing through my mind: How can I begin to stop coloring my hair? How long will it take for my natural color to grow out? Will I appear older? Will my attractiveness diminish? Will I feel less confident or frumpy? What judgments will I face from others when they see my gray hair? Will I feel less valuable in some way? … Why do I even color my hair? Finally, I gathered my thoughts and focused on the sensible part of my mind, pushing aside the panic that threatened to overwhelm me.

The most crucial question, one that I had never considered before, was why I started coloring my hair in the first place. What was I hoping to achieve with this significant investment of both time and money, and was I truly accomplishing my goals? The silence was deafening; I had no answers! I was pouring thousands of dollars and nearly thirty hours of my precious time each year into something that I couldn’t articulate. That realization felt utterly absurd to me.

REFLECT ON YOUR JOURNEY: WHEN DID YOU START COLORING YOUR HAIR?

I embarked on my hair coloring journey around the age of 38 when a stylist caught my attention in the mirror and whispered conspiratorially, “Did you want me to cover up these grays?” Instantly, a wave of shame washed over me, as if she had pointed out a glaring flaw in my appearance, and I hastily agreed to her suggestion. In hindsight, I wish I had flipped the script and asked a more empowering question: “Why should I cover them?”

Certainly, the stylist had good intentions; she aimed to help me leave the salon feeling beautiful. Yet, therein lies the core issue, doesn’t it? Her inclination to mask my gray hair stemmed from two deeply ingrained, pervasive, malignant assumptions within the beauty industry: gray hair equals aging (does it truly?) and aging equates to diminished beauty (does it?). Once these notions infiltrate your mindset, they expand their reach, sowing seeds of negativity that warp your self-image. Soon, you find yourself staring into the mirror, critiquing every imperfection as you yearn for the flawless skin of a 20-year-old. It’s a tiresome existence.

After grappling with these thoughts, I made a pivotal decision: I canceled my next salon appointment. I needed the space to contemplate my choices, free from the pressure of an impending hair appointment that would cloud my judgment. I was determined to shed the shame associated with my gray hair, yet I understood the importance of processing this shift thoughtfully and recalibrating my expectations realistically. Just because I was choosing not to cover my gray didn’t mean I wanted to navigate this journey solo. As my husband insightfully pointed out, “Diane Keaton looks stunning with gray hair, but you know she has professionals to assist her.”

I conducted research and discovered a stylist who specialized in assisting women through the transition to gray hair. She skillfully added highlights and applied a silver toner, resulting in a faux salt-and-pepper appearance. As my hair grew, I returned to her a couple of times for further adjustments, gradually reducing the color treatments. This thoughtful approach allowed me to transition to my authentic salt-and-pepper hair seamlessly, granting me the time I needed to adjust. While opting for a dramatic chop to start anew is a bold choice, I wasn’t ready for that leap—if you have the courage to do it, more power to you! It’s a more economical option and spares you from the chemical exposure!

NAVIGATING THE CHALLENGE: IS IT HARD TO LET YOUR HAIR GO GRAY?

In the initial years of allowing my colored ends to grow out, I certainly encountered moments of uncertainty. There were days when I felt the gray made me appear a tad older or somewhat faded. Some days, I longed for the deep, dark hue of my younger self. On particularly weary days, it was challenging to mask my fatigue.

Confronting these moments of doubt proved manageable, however. Whenever my confidence dipped, I had a toolbox of strategies to elevate it. On some days, a touch of blush or a change in wardrobe to colors that complemented my silver (less brown, more blue) did wonders. I frequently styled my hair to accentuate the gray, which surprisingly bolstered my confidence. Often, I reflected on my daughters, pondering how they would remember me when I’m no longer around; did I want them to recall a mother who fought against aging or one who embraced the passage of time with gratitude and grace?

CELEBRATING THE CHANGE: HOW DO YOU LIKE YOUR GRAY HAIR NOW?

It has been over six years since I made the conscious choice to stop hiding my gray hair, and my silver strands now shimmer throughout my long, wavy locks. I have significant gray around my temples and the crown of my head, yet from a distance, I still resemble a brunette. At this stage, I can genuinely affirm that the majority of my feelings surrounding this transition are empowering. It’s as if I’ve liberated myself from invisible shackles. I am free from the countless hours spent in the salon chair, the overwhelming scent of chemicals enveloping me, and the hefty $300 bills for a service that failed to provide lasting relaxation or nourishment. I feel confident, vibrant, and beautiful—perhaps more than ever before. I perceive myself as fifty, which feels just right because I am fifty. I prioritize caring for my body, skin, and mind, recognizing that every day spent living this life is a precious gift, and I aspire to cherish every moment.

Most importantly, without the distraction of worrying about visible roots, I feel more profoundly connected to my purpose. My work in the beauty industry isn’t about helping people appear younger; it’s about empowering individuals to feel healthier and more alive. If coloring your hair enhances your sense of well-being and vitality, I wholeheartedly support it, especially with emerging lower-toxicity options. However, if you’re uncertain about your motivations behind any beauty practice—from hair dye to botox to makeup—I believe it’s crucial to evaluate your choices to ensure you’re not trapped in a habit rooted in outdated beliefs you no longer endorse. By proudly wearing this shimmering silver crown, I hope to inspire others to celebrate the years we are fortunate enough to experience rather than fear the inevitable changes that time brings.
