Key Factors to Consider When Selecting Your Ideal Eyeshadow Palette
Avoiding Talc: The Importance of Ingredient Awareness
As highlighted in the title of this blog post, it’s crucial to recognize that talc is a significant ingredient to steer clear of when selecting your eyeshadow palette. This mineral is frequently utilized in various cosmetics, personal care items, and even food products as an anti-caking agent.
Talc is a soft mineral known for its moisture-absorbing properties and smooth texture. However, the reality is that it can often be contaminated with asbestos due to the mining and manufacturing processes involved. This contamination raises serious health concerns.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), talc that is contaminated with asbestos is “carcinogenic to humans.” This stark warning emphasizes the potential dangers associated with using talc in beauty products.

Moreover, the risks are heightened when talc is present in aerosol products or any products that can be easily inhaled, increasing the chance of respiratory issues. It’s vital to note that even asbestos-free talc can still cause skin irritations and respiratory problems when inhaled.
Furthermore, asbestos-free talc may still pose cancer risks, particularly when applied to sensitive areas such as the perineum, as indicated by the IARC. Given these concerns, I personally choose to exclude talc from my personal care products whenever possible.

Additional Ingredients to Avoid in Eyeshadow
While avoiding talc is paramount, it is essential to be vigilant about other potentially harmful ingredients present in eyeshadow products. Here are several ingredients commonly found in eyeshadows that warrant caution:
- PTFE– This ingredient, found in some cosmetics, is the same one I avoid in my non-toxic cookware. If you’re curious about its implications, check out my Non-Toxic Cookware post for more information.
- Phenoxyethanol– Although there are clean sources of this ingredient, it’s crucial to verify with the brand if it appears on the ingredient list, as it has the potential to be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, a known carcinogen.
- Parabens (-methyl, -butyl, -propyl, etc.)
- BHT/BHA
- Aluminum Powder
- PEGs
- Petrolatum

Artificial dyes and colorants are also a significant concern when it comes to makeup, especially for achieving bold colors. While I generally prefer to avoid products containing these ingredients, it’s important to recognize that many brands require them to create vibrant shades.
Colorants or dyes like FD&C Blue or Yellow-5 are derived from petroleum and may contain irritating compounds such as benzidine, a known carcinogen. (source)
Nevertheless, it’s worth noting that artificial dyes typically comprise only a small percentage of the overall ingredients in a product.
Do I occasionally wear lipsticks that contain artificial dyes? Yes, absolutely! However, it’s a personal choice, and each consumer must determine their comfort level with such ingredients.

I appreciate that Beautycounter actively tests for heavy metals, and I love the convenience of the built-in mirror in the packaging. However, I do wish there were more matte shades overall in the palette. While the two neutral shades are fantastic, I find myself consistently using those, alongside the darker brown for the crease and lining my eyes. The sparkle shade is reserved for special occasions like the holidays. For those with mature skin, I would advise caution with sparkles or shimmer. The eyeshadows perform well when I prime my eyes with concealer and powder, but I also make sure to tap off excess product to avoid fallout.
