Understanding Electrolytes: Why You Should Consider Supplementing
Electrolytes consist of essential minerals present in the bloodstream, including sodium, potassium, calcium, bicarbonate, magnesium, chloride, and phosphate.1 These minerals are crucial for various bodily functions.
As their name suggests, electrolytes facilitate the conduction of electrical charges within the body. This is vital for numerous physiological processes.
In addition to aiding hydration, electrolytes play a significant role in regulating muscle contractions, supporting the nervous system, and maintaining pH balance in our bodies. A proper pH level indicates the equilibrium between acidity and alkalinity in our systems.
- Sodium and potassium work synergistically to maintain a healthy fluid balance in the body through active transport.
- Magnesium is essential for cellular energy conversion, particularly for optimal brain and muscle function.
- Calcium contributes to bone mineralization, muscle contractions, nerve impulse transmission, blood clotting, and hormone regulation.
- Bicarbonate plays a crucial role in maintaining the acid-base balance in the bloodstream.
- Chloride is vital for various bodily functions, including fluid balance, digestion, acid-base equilibrium, and immune response.
- Phosphorus is essential for bone health and supports numerous metabolic pathways.
Electrolytes can be lost through sweat, urine, vomiting, and diarrhea. Situations like pregnancy, breastfeeding, high temperatures, dry climates, and high altitudes can increase the demand for these vital minerals.
Replenishing electrolytes is particularly beneficial after illness, when fluids are lost, or post a long, sweat-inducing workout. While a diet rich in whole foods typically supports balanced electrolyte levels, a diet high in processed foods or regular alcohol consumption may lead to dehydration, necessitating an extra boost of electrolytes.

Watch for these signs of potential electrolyte imbalance:
Signs of imbalance may include fatigue, nausea, headaches, brain fog, fluctuations in blood pressure, muscle cramps, and low energy levels.
The three cornerstone minerals in electrolytes are:
- Sodium (the most prevalent electrolyte in the body)
- Potassium
- Chloride
Along with water, sodium, potassium, and chloride are essential dietary elements that must come from our food intake. According to the National Research Council, the recommended minimum daily intake for sodium is 500 mg, for potassium is 2,000 mg, and for chloride is 750 mg.2
The World Health Organization has outlined a rehydration therapy that several brands have adopted as a guideline for electrolyte intake.3
- 2.6 g of sodium chloride
- 1.5 g of potassium chloride
- 2.9 g of sodium citrate
- 13.5 g of glucose
The inclusion of glucose is intended to enhance the body’s absorption of electrolytes.
Understanding the Regulation of Electrolytes
Although electrolytes themselves are not strictly regulated, some brands opt for third-party testing to ensure safety and quality. These tests often check for contaminants, such as microplastics and heavy metals, which can be present in salt depending on its source.

Review
I am genuinely impressed with the ingredient quality in this electrolyte powder. It contains trace minerals and electrolytes sourced from whole foods, optimizing hydration without processed synthetics. Their salt comes from ancient sea beds, retaining its mineral content. I appreciate that their organic flavors are derived from real fruit, avoiding artificial additives. After trying all their flavors—watermelon, orange, and lemon-lime—my favorites are a tie between orange and lemon-lime. The flavor is milder compared to some electrolytes, like LMNT, which has a stronger salty profile; these have less than half the sodium content. For those who prefer a less intense flavor, these options could be ideal. When mixed in 40 ounces of water, they present a lighter taste, complemented by a hint of coconut flavor. However, if you’re not a fan of coconut, these might not suit your palate. I felt revitalized after consuming these, and I wish they were available in convenient travel packets instead of just bags. They do offer a 60-day money-back guarantee, which is a plus. I can definitely envision turning these into popsicles for my kids or even for myself!

I genuinely appreciate these electrolytes! They present a bolder flavor compared to others, akin to LMNT, albeit with slightly less sodium. The flavors are delightful, and I particularly enjoy the strawberry lemonade, as well as mixed berry and lemon-lime. There isn’t a bad flavor option; it ultimately depends on your mood. I commonly use this brand’s salt for cooking, which makes me feel confident in the quality of salt I’m consuming through their electrolytes. There are no artificial ingredients, and the flavors are refreshing without causing bloating or swelling. Review
I’ve sampled two flavors from Just Ingredients—strawberry limeade and tropical paradise. While I found the strawberry limeade refreshingly delicious, the tropical paradise flavor didn’t resonate with me as much. However, both would make excellent popsicle flavors for kids during summer! I admire the clean ingredients in these mixes; they contain nothing artificial. For those seeking an electrolyte option with lower sodium levels, I highly recommend this brand, which offers only 100 mg of sodium per packet. The other minerals included are potassium, magnesium, chloride, and calcium. They are available in both single-serve packets and larger bags, making the single-serve option perfect for travel. I also appreciate their commitment to third-party testing, making this another fantastic electrolyte choice.

Review
I was unaware of this brand until I began my research on electrolytes. I appreciate their transparent ingredient list, which clearly outlines the sources they utilize. For instance, the citric acid is derived from non-GMO cassava root, unlike many brands that use aspergillus niger, a type of mold. There are no artificial sweeteners in their products. However, it’s important to note that these electrolytes are on the pricier side. The flavors are delightful; I particularly enjoyed the sampler pack, allowing me to experience all their electrolyte flavors, which is helpful for finding your favorites. Their summer flavor, tropical punch, is simply delicious and evokes summer vibes! I also enjoyed lemon-lime and strawberry kiwi. Unlike other electrolyte brands, these do not have an overpowering salty flavor. They contain about a quarter of the sodium found in LMNT electrolyte packets, making them lighter yet still flavorful.
Additionally, I appreciate that Cure offers children’s electrolytes, available in two delicious flavors: pink lemonade and berry, which my kids enjoyed! They always want something to enhance their water, and I love that I can provide them with a product designed specifically for kids, which encourages them to drink more water, especially during summer! I discovered that you can also use any of their electrolyte packets, as they all contain the same sodium content, so the marketing for children is simply a bonus.
