Mr. James grew up in Yea, a quaint country town in Victoria, Australia, with a modest population of just 1,100 residents, about 100 kilometers north-east of Melbourne. His upbringing was humble, filled with challenges that shaped his character and drive.
In 1986, after his family relocated to the UK, his father, originally from Britain, attempted to establish a business selling imported Australian products in Birmingham. This venture, however, faced many obstacles.
Reflecting on his childhood, he recalls, ‘As a seven-year-old, I would often spend time in the shop with my dad unpacking stock or merchandising the store. The business was not a success, and in the late ’80s, every UK pound we lost equated to losing $3 for us,’ illustrating the financial difficulties they faced.
With money tight and a desire to help, young Blair started exploring ways to earn his own income. He took a box of Vegemite that his father was struggling to sell and ventured around the shopping center to see if anyone would buy the jars, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit from a young age.

In his quest for independence, young Blair aimed to buy a calculator watch he had long desired. He successfully earned enough money to purchase the £11 watch ($20.50) and even gave his dad £8 ($15) in change. This experience taught him the invaluable lesson that if he wanted something, he needed to find his own way to achieve it, instilling a sense of determination and resourcefulness that would guide him in his future endeavors.
Eventually, the family returned to Australia after their time in the UK became financially challenging. Upon their return, they faced further hardships, losing their family home. Mr. James recalls, ‘My dad struggled to find work, and my mum had to return to work just to make ends meet,’ illustrating the persistent obstacles they encountered.
The financial struggles continued for several years, yet the sacrifices made by his parents ensured that Blair and his siblings had their basic needs met, despite the family’s difficulties. ‘The financial struggles continued for the next eight years, not that anyone would have known, as my parents sacrificed everything to ensure my brother, sister, and I had everything we needed,’ he reflected.
