Personally, Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen has become a staple for my daily routine. The matte, barely-there feeling is ideal for my combination skin, leaving my face hydrated but not greasy. Meanwhile, Isdin’s Eryfotona Actinica mineral sunscreen is Dr. Hartman’s go-to daily product thanks to its zinc-only emulsion with DNA-repairing enzymes. He also recommends the Versed Guards Up sunscreen, which has a peachy hue to avoid the white cast generally associated with mineral (also referred to as “physical”) sunscreens.
For a more finished look
Although tinted moisturizers with SPF can be tricky if you sweat a lot, they’re perfect for a special occasion, more indirect sun exposure, or if you simply feel like your face needs a little extra pizzazz.
“I love a good skin tint with SPF built in like the Rare Beauty Positive Light tinted moisturizer. It goes on beautifully, matches my skin tone, and is protective,” says Murray.
I can attest to the magic of this tinted moisturizer, which comes in 24 shades and pairs well with the brand’s other products—like concealers, bronzers, and liquid blush—for a more complete look. It is, however, on the lower end of the spectrum with SPF 20, so be sure to reapply often (more on this later).
I’d be remiss not to mention Naomi Osaka’s Kinlò brand, which was designed specifically with melanated people in mind. Launched in 2021, the tennis star’s sun care line offers the Always Golden daily moisturizer with a slight brown tint that works for all skin tones , as well as the Golden Rays sunscreen that comes in three shades for a more tailored match.
For the body
“For my body I will typically use the biggest bottle of drugstore sunscreen that is SPF 50+ and water resistant,” says Gray, who recommends Neutrogena Beach Defense and Neutrogena Invisible Daily Defense sunscreen in particular. Even their drugstore-branded substitutes will do the trick and are usually less expensive. “But if I’m looking to really glow, I like sunscreen oil. There are a number of them that I like at various price points: Supergoop Glow Oil, Kroger sunscreen oil, Hawaiian Tropic Dry sunscreen oil , and Kopari Sun Shield Body Glow.”
When it comes to a day at the beach, outdoor workouts, walking around all day, or any other activity that may involve lots of sweating, Gray recommends La Roche-Posay’s Anthelios Melt-In Milk sunscreen or Anthelios Cooling Water sunscreen. Murray, on the other hand, turns to Sun Bum sunscreen spray, which is widely available at most drugstores. Another Murray favorite is Black Girl Sunscreen lotion.
“I find it perfect for daily body use because it is sheer, and has two-for-one benefits like hydration and sun protection,” she says, emphasizing the brand’s rich formula with avocado, jojoba, and sunflower oils.
For easy reapplication
Dr. Hartman recommends reapplying sunscreen every two hours, especially if you’re actively outside in the sun. Sprays and oils make it easy to add another layer of SPF to your body, but those products are often too greasy for the face or impossible to use with a full face of makeup already on. Luckily, there are several possible solutions.
