(ROANOKE, Va.) — “All the Dirt” isn’t just about gardening. It’s about sustainability and giving back to the earth.
One way to do this is recycling!
Terry McGuire from Sustainable Roanoke stopped by WFXR News to give us all the dirt on the organization and an event coming up this month.
Sustainable Roanoke is an all-volunteer, grassroots environmental organization with members throughout the Roanoke Valley. Mcguire says it’s probably best known for its semi-regular recycling events that we host throughout the local area.
McGuire says Sustainable Roanoke hopes the events will help build community, educate neighbors on the plastic crisis and single-use plastics, as well as inspire people to live more sustainable, low-impact lifestyles.
Sustainable Roanoke collects hard-to-recycle plastics and other hard-to-recycle single-use items. McGuire says many don’t realize Roanoke City, and most jurisdictions, only collect #1 and #2 bottles. He says everything else is trashed .Sustainable Roanoke collects not only #5 & #6 plastics, but also take-out food and beverage containers, Styrofoam, packaging from body and oral care products, tennis balls, was well as snack and candy wrappers.
McGuire suggests you check Sustainable Ronaoke’s website to review the list of acceptable items before attending one of their events. He also says it’s critical that items arrive clean and free of food or other residues.
Sustainable Roanoke’s next recycling event:
Saturday, November 19th
Westhampton Christian Church
2515 Grandin Road SW
Westhampton’s recently organized green team will host the recycling event.
There will be a refill station, where you can purchase liquid soaps in your own reusable container, as well as uCell2us to collect electronic waste, the Harvest Collective to teach about composting, and several middle school students will be there for community service hours.
