Using a castor oil pack just a couple times a week is a simple way to support liver health.
I’ve questioned the importance of the appendix or the spleen, but never the liver. The liver is a workhorse, filtering more than a liter of blood every minute.
The liver does everything from detoxifying the blood, metabolizing nutrients to producing bile and a whole lot more. That’s why it needs some TLC to ensure that it can perform all of its duties well. Today we’re talking about castor oil packs and how to use them to support the liver.

Castor Oil Packs for Liver
I’m going to break down what a castor oil pack is, how it can support the liver, and how to use a castor oil pack. If you’ve never used a castor oil pack before, it’s not only relaxing, but can be a good way to support liver health by improving circulation, nervous system and lymphatic flow.
What Is A Castor Oil Pack for Liver?
A castor oil pack is an ancient remedy that has been used for centuries for a variety of health benefits. Castor oil is rich in Ricinoleic acid and comes from the castor bean plant, Ricinus communis which is believed to have detoxification properties.
A castor oil pack involves applying a cloth soaked in castor oil to any area of the body, but usually the stomach or liver area and then covering with a towel and heating pad or hot water bottle for 30-60 minutes.
While castor oil packs have not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration or FDA for medical use, it doesn’t mean that they are not effective. Castor oil packs because they are applied topically on the body, they are considered a wellness or cosmetic type product and not subject to FDA review as long as they are marketed without disease claims. However, interesting to note, that castor oil by itself is recognized as an over-the-counter laxative.
Are Castor Oil Packs Good for The Liver?
Are castor oil packs a miracle cure? No. However, they are not snake oil either.
Since the primary job description of the liver is to detoxify the body, it makes sense that if it’s supported, it will perform better. If you’re dealing with inflammation, poor digestion, bowel irregularity, fatigue, even skin issues, then castor oil packs can be a gentle yet effective therapy.
Using a castor oil pack can support the body’s natural detoxification pathways and therefore overall liver function. Sometimes our body just needs us to relax long enough to get into parasympathetic mode so it can move things along in the digestive tract.
Every time I use a castor oil pack, I notice an improvement in my sleep, probably because there’s less work for my liver to do while I’m sleeping!

What Does Castor Oil Pack Do for Liver?
Supports circulation
The castor oil and heat increase blood flow to the liver which improves the delivery of oxygen, nutrients, and removal of waste.
Supports lymphatic drainage
The lymphatic system relies on external therapies to keep waste moving. The main fatty acid in castor oil is called ricinoleic acid and there have been some studies that have demonstrated an increase in lymphatic activity after using a castor oil pack. The liver and lymphatic system work together to rid the body of toxins.
Supports the parasympathetic nervous system
Rest and relaxation activate the vagus nerve and parasympathetic system, which support digestion, detoxification, and repair. This helps the liver function at its highest level.
Supports bowel regularity
A 2011 clinical study found that castor oil packs helped relieve constipation in elderly patients without adverse effects. The liver and colon work together to remove toxins from your body.
