The phrase eco-friendly packaging is often misleading; in reality, the most environmentally sound option is to eliminate packaging completely. Imagine plucking an apple directly from a tree and enjoying the crisp, juicy flavor—that experience embodies true sustainable consumption. It’s essential to recognize that while packaging can serve a function, it often comes at an environmental cost that needs careful consideration.
As a brand dedicated to delivering packaged goods to consumers, our commitment is to avoid being eco-deceptive or environmentally unaware. We strive to utilize the least harmful packaging alternatives for each product while continuously reassessing our options annually. My in-depth research into packaging has been extensive, akin to my medical studies, revealing that the solutions are rarely straightforward! Particularly with natural products, packaging can be crucial for protecting and preserving the integrity of the item. Factors such as the weight of the packaging can affect shipping emissions, and some so-called ‘green’ options may involve unethical labor practices abroad. Navigating this complex landscape is a challenge, even for seasoned professionals.
Effective Strategies for Choosing Packaging That Aligns with Your Brand Values
At Osmia, our approach to selecting packaging involves a meticulous evaluation of all available options from diverse perspectives. We engage in a thoughtful discussion to arrive at the best possible choice at that specific moment. While it may not feel like a flawless decision—after all, it is still packaging—we want our customers to know that we are continually focused on improvement. As we grow, we anticipate our packaging will evolve alongside advancements in environmental awareness, which may lead to innovative materials and creative solutions. Here’s an update on our current practices as of 2023.
Exploring Our Commitment to Environmentally-Friendly Packaging Solutions
Utilizing Sustainable Paper Cartons for Product Protection
The majority of our products are securely housed in printed paper boxes designed to ensure their safety during transit. We utilize paper that is FSC-certified, guaranteeing responsible sourcing, and our printed materials feature UV inks that do not contain harmful solvents or release VOCs. Importantly, all our boxes are fully recyclable, aligning with our commitment to sustainability.
Choosing Recyclable Glass Bottles and Jars for Quality Preservation
Many of our cherished products, such as body oils and mousses, are packaged in glass containers, which are recyclable in most areas (provided they are rinsed thoroughly!). However, it’s important to note that components like pumps, caps, dip tubes, and lids typically aren’t recyclable. For our Purely Calm Gel Toner and Purely Simple Face Cream, users need to separate the inner liner before recycling, a process that takes only about five seconds, although the liner and cap themselves cannot be recycled.
Innovative Plastic Tubes and Bottles for Sustainable Solutions
Our lip balm tubes are crafted from plastic that is recyclable and made from a material known as Eco Smart, which has a significantly reduced degradation time compared to conventional plastics. Additionally, our hand creams and Purely Gentle Mud Cleanser are packaged in tubes made from 50% post-consumer recycled materials, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability.
Ethically Sourced Canvas Bags for Eco-Conscious Consumers
Our canvas bags are produced from organic cotton, certified by GOTS and Fair Trade standards, ensuring that they not only serve a functional purpose but also contribute positively to ethical manufacturing practices.
Sustainable Shipping Materials Made from Recycled Content
We prioritize sustainability in our shipping processes, utilizing boxes and paper materials made from recycled content, all of which are recyclable as well. Our shipping labels are either FSC-certified or made from recycled materials. Furthermore, we make it a point to repurpose all bubble wrap and plastic shipping materials received from our suppliers when packing wholesale orders, minimizing waste in our operations.
In addition, we utilize recycled printer paper in our offices and strive to recycle and compost as much as possible in our daily operations. Since Earth Day 2018, we have planted a tree for every order received, totaling over 120,000 trees and continuing to grow! This initiative reflects our commitment to environmental stewardship.
In summary, we genuinely CARE about our impact! Our mission is to minimize our environmental footprint, which encompasses our products, packaging, and overall practices. We pledge to keep this post updated each year, so you can stay informed about our packaging advancements and the rationale behind them. In the meantime, we encourage you to dispose of your Osmia packaging responsibly, recycling everything that is recyclable, including the crinkled paper in your Osmia packages—birds adore using them for their nests!
With love and recycled content,
