Whether your hair is straight, curly, kinky or coily, no doubt there’s a haircare line out there dedicated to your hair type. But let’s be honest, what we want from haircare these days is so much more than simply catering to our hair’s natural texture . We want colour protection, frizz-control, volumising properties and scalp care. Which can make it hard to find a brand that truly ticks all the boxes when it comes to your own specific needs.
Take my hair, for example. I have fine, bleached, damaged hair that’s naturally curly but I straighten it daily. While there are plenty of products addressing each of those hair types and specific needs, it’s difficult to find something that encapsulates everything in one handy product. Which is where Function of Beauty comes in.
You might’ve heard of Function of Beauty before. It’s the brand that allows you to fully customise your shampoo and conditioner so that it caters to your exact hair concerns and needs. It’s essentially like building your own formula by scratch – with everything from hair type, goals and scent in mind. But now, Function of Beauty just became even easier to shop, having launched into Cult Beauty – meaning you can mix up your own custom formula at home. Is your interest piqued? Here’s everything you need to know .
Founded in 2016 by a trio of chemists and engineers, Function of Beauty set out to individually formulate shampoo and conditioners based on a person’s specific hair type, goals and preferences. Previously a service only offered on the Function of Beauty website, the brand has now designed a way for consumers to shop the concept at other retailers. Launching today into Cult Beauty, you’re now able to mix your own custom shampoo and conditioner formulas at home – with over 3,000 possible combinations available.
So, how do you do it? Well, there are four shampoo and conditioner bases to choose from based on your hair type and texture (straight, wavy, curly and coily). The shampoo and conditioner bases are packed with sulphate-free, vegan ingredients – from lightweight and hydrating coconut water and avocado oil (for straight hair types) to nourishing flaxseed oil and castor oil (for coily hair).
Once you’ve chosen your hair base, you can then select up to three further ‘hair goals’ (from strengthen, deep condition, volumise, shine, curl definition, anti-frizz, soothe scalp, lengthen, colour protection, and thermal protection ). These booster shots can then be mixed with your base at home, to custom-blend your very own bespoke product.
The shampoo and conditioners are £12 each, with each booster shot costing £4 (which contains two boosters, one for your shampoo and one for your conditioner).
