Kenyans could be using contaminated cosmetics products in the market, the Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has said.

KEBS highlighted 435 beauty products, banning them from shops and supermarket shelves across the country.
Contaminated beauty products
The quality watchdog claimed the products contain mercury and hydroquinone compounds which are unsafe for use.
The brands range from soaps, skin-lightening creams and lotions majorly sold across shops and supermarkets.
According to KEBS, the products were not qualified for use by the Pharma and Poisons Board, meaning they can only be used under the directions of a physician.

“KEBS wishes to notify the public that the below-listed cosmetic brands are banned and therefore should not be sold. The products contain harmful substances which are hydroquinone, mercury and its compounds.
“The prohibition/ban is aimed at protecting unsuspecting consumers and discouraging dumping of these products in the Kenyan Market. Hydroquinone, Mercury, oxidizing agents and hormonal preparations are used for treating various medical conditions,” read KEBS statement in part as quoted by Citizen Digital .
The regulator warned of the products’ long-term effects, including skin discolouration, kidney damage, digestive illnesses, and nervous diseases.
KEBS to punish retailers, firms
Others are fatigue, weakness, bone pain, skin rashes, swelling, redness or peeling.
Firms and retailers found distributing the products, risk being charged in a court of law by KEBS.

KEBS bans 10 cooking oil brands
In September 2022, the regulator suspended 10 edible oil and cooking fats, including Fresh Fri, Fry Mate, Sali and Fresh Fri with Garlic Oil.
Pwani Oil, the manufacturer of these brands, insisted that its cooking oil products are safe for consumption after they were flagged.
The company director Rajul Malde said the four brands had passed the compliance test by both independent regulators SGS and KEBS.
