These surfactants are commonly found in detergents and personal care products such as shampoos and toothpaste. They are produced by
‘reacting lauryl alcohol derived from either petroleum or plant sources with sulfur trioxide, leading to the formation of hydrogen lauryl sulfate, which is subsequently neutralized with sodium carbonate to yield SLS.” (source)
This process uses petroleum products, which is alarming! I certainly prefer to keep such substances out of my laundry room, especially when I strive to avoid clothing made from synthetic, petroleum-based materials.
It’s crucial to note that SLS is a recognized skin irritant. In a study, 42% of participants showed signs of an ‘irritant reaction.’ (source) While patch testing was employed in this study, and your detergent is rinsed off your clothing, it’s still a component worth considering, particularly for individuals with sensitive skin or for babies.
SLES is derived from SLS through a process called ethoxylation. Although this creates a milder chemical, it can also produce a by-product known as 1,4-dioxane, a recognized carcinogen. (source)
Be Cautious of Synthetic Fragrances
The term “fragrance” can refer to a vast array of ingredients, many of which are harmful! Due to ‘trade secrets,’ it’s often challenging to identify what specific components are included in a brand’s fragrance.

Suzi: This liquid laundry detergent has a delightful fragrance! If you’re unfamiliar with Thieves products, they have a warm scent of cinnamon and cloves, which I adore. This detergent cleans my clothes effectively and is reasonably priced. You can even divide the Thieves Laundry Detergent into three 32-ounce jugs by adding two capfuls of Thieves Household Cleaner and any essential oils you like (around 40 drops) and filling the rest with water. You only need about ½ to 1 capful per load, making it last a long time.
