Discover the world of non-toxic alternatives to conventional air fresheners!
Many of us are familiar with those overpowering plug-in air fresheners that emit strong fragrances, making it uncomfortable even for those who aren’t sensitive to scents. Personally, I find these products unappealing and wouldn’t classify them as genuine air fresheners. However, there are occasions when I wish to revitalize the air within my home, and I was determined to explore better options that are not only effective but also healthier. In this article, I’ll share my favorite methods for enhancing the aroma of my living space by either purifying the air or introducing delightful scents.

Understanding Harmful Ingredients in Conventional Air Fresheners
The primary culprit in air fresheners is, unsurprisingly, the fragrance they contain. While many people purchase air fresheners to enjoy a pleasant aroma, if they were aware of how toxic these fragrances could be, it’s likely they would reconsider using them in their homes.
If you’re interested in a deeper understanding of fragrance, I have dedicated an entire post to this topic. Although fragrances in personal care products are monitored by the FDA, those found in household products fall under the oversight of the Consumer Product Safety Commission. According to Anne Steinemann, a professor of civil and environmental engineering and public affairs at UW, the fragrances used in cosmetics and those in home products often share many similarities. It’s astonishing that the very products marketed as tools to ‘freshen’ the air are, in fact, doing the opposite.
In reality, the frequent use of air fresheners is linked to increased levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, benzene, toluene, ethyl benzene, and xylenes in indoor environments. (source)
Moreover, the specific makeup of the fragrance in air fresheners is often a mystery, as brands are not mandated to disclose this information. This lack of transparency is alarming!
Here are a few additional ingredients you should be cautious of and try to avoid inhaling regularly – though you can’t always rely on the ingredient list to reveal them:
- Phthalates: These compounds are used to prolong the scent but are linked to hormonal alterations, birth defects, allergic reactions, and asthma (source).
- Parabens: Known to disrupt hormone function (source).
- Aerosol Sprays: These can release VOCs, which may trigger or worsen respiratory issues, cardiovascular problems, and allergic responses (source).
Fortunately, there are numerous healthier alternatives to freshen your home without dispersing toxic ingredients. In my view, the cleanest air is the freshest air. However, I recognize that many people are looking for alternatives to conventional plug-ins and sprays, and I have various solutions to suit everyone’s preferences!
Top Recommended Non-Toxic Air Fresheners for Healthy Living
1. Embrace Non-Toxic Candles for a Calming Atmosphere

Candles are a delightful way to introduce a pleasant aroma into your living space. However, most conventional candles are laden with toxic ingredients. Here are three key factors to consider when selecting a candle that promotes a healthier environment:
- Wax: Many candles are crafted from paraffin wax, a byproduct of petroleum. When burned, these products release harmful substances, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as benzene, a recognized carcinogen. Instead, opt for candles made from 100% soy (ideally non-GMO), coconut oil, vegetable oil, or beeswax. It’s also crucial to ensure there are no hidden ingredients in the wax, as some brands may include them.
- Wick: Look for wicks made from 100% cotton or unbleached hemp, or untreated wood soaked in a natural substance.
- Fragrance: Choose candles scented with pure essential oils, blends of 100% essential oils, fragrance oils sourced from natural essential oils, or safe synthetic fragrances. If you see the term “fragrance” on the ingredient list, it’s essential to inquire further with the company for clarification. Being made with phthalate-free fragrance oils alone isn’t sufficient!
Some of my favorite non-toxic candle brands include:
- Fontana – Use code GURLGONEGREEN15 to save 15% on your purchase.
- Terralite – Use code GGG10 to save 10% on your purchase.
- Bluecorn – Excellent options for non-toxic candles.
- Welch’s Candle Co. – Known for their quality products.

2. Enhance Your Space with Essential Oil Diffusers

Essential oils have gained immense popularity in the realm of non-toxic living. While I may not always choose essential oils, they provide a wonderful way to infuse your home with natural aromas. The best part is the variety available, allowing you to select the scents that resonate with you.
It’s essential, however, to ensure that the essential oils you use are safe for you, your family, and any pets you may have.
3. Discover the Benefits of Non-Toxic Room Sprays

This concept was relatively new to me. I have always been aware of products like Febreeze, but I’ve consistently avoided them due to their chemical scent and the knowledge that they contain harmful ingredients. Thus, when I discovered that some of my favorite brands had developed ‘room sprays,’ I was eager to try them out.
- Primally Pure Room Spray (use code GURLGONEGREEN10 for a 10% discount). They currently offer five delightful scents (I personally loved the Cool Citrus Breeze!).
- Rowe Casa Room Spray – Also available in five scents, I tried the Peppermint + Vanilla, which was a hit with my whole family.
When I first received these room sprays, my children were thrilled. The fragrance was light and pleasant. However, it’s worth noting that the scent doesn’t linger for long. This option is ideal if you are seeking a genuine “spray” air freshener. However, if you desire a longer-lasting aroma, I recommend considering one of the other options mentioned.
Use code GURLGONEGREEN10 for a 10% discount on your Primally Pure order and GGG for first-time customers to enjoy a 20% discount on your Rowe Casa purchase!
4. Enjoy the Aroma of Wax Melts as a Safe Alternative

Years ago, I used to use a candle warmer, but I had forgotten about them until I began researching alternatives for this post. I realized what a brilliant idea they are! You can enjoy all the benefits of a non-toxic candle without the need to burn anything. This may be particularly appealing to some. Additionally, with a reputable brand like Fontana, which is MADESAFE certified, you can trust that the ingredients will be top-notch! I tried several of their scent options and found that they offered a more subtle fragrance compared to their candles. This makes them a great choice!
Use code GURLGONEGREEN15 to receive 10% off your order!
5. Create Inviting Scents with Simmer Pots of Herbs and Spices

This method feels especially seasonal to me. However, there’s no reason you can’t get creative and simmer a variety of herbs and spices on your stovetop to enhance your home’s ambiance.
This is an excellent option for the holidays. Even better, you can package the ingredients as thoughtful gifts. What a fantastic idea!
Feel free to get inventive and develop your own recipes, or simply use whatever you have on hand! There’s truly no right or wrong way to approach this.
Exploring Alternatives to Conventional Air Fresheners
Many of us were raised to believe that a clean environment should have a strong scent. This is particularly evident when we think of fresh laundry. The reality is that when something is clean, it typically doesn’t have a detectable scent. I believe one of the best strategies to enhance the air quality in your home is not to mask odors with artificial fragrances but to ensure that you have pure, fresh, and clean air to breathe.

1. Let Fresh Air In by Opening Your Windows
One of the most straightforward and budget-friendly ways to invigorate the air in your home is to open the windows. Indoor air quality is often more polluted than that of the outdoors, with concentrations of certain pollutants being two to five times higher than typical outdoor levels, according to the EPA. (source) Even during colder months, you can open your windows for a brief period, and you will notice a refreshing change in the air quality of your home.

2. Invest in an Air Purifier for Cleaner Air
In my opinion, clean air equates to fresh air. Every element in our environment, including cleaning products, furniture, paint, and flooring, can release and off-gas harmful chemicals. Furthermore, pollutants like viruses, bacteria, mold, mycotoxins, and pet dander can compromise the indoor air quality we breathe every day.
One of my go-to solutions for maintaining the freshest and cleanest air in my home is utilizing my favorite air purifier from Austin Air. This device offers an advanced method for ensuring clean air circulates throughout our living space.

3. Use Deodorizers to Combat Unpleasant Odors
A deodorizer is another effective option to help keep unwanted smells out of your home. Rather than masking unpleasant scents, it absorbs them. Many people associate baking soda with deodorization, which is indeed effective! Because many odors are acidic, baking soda neutralizes the pH, significantly reducing the smell. Research has shown that baking soda can decrease odors from food waste by 70%! (source)
In addition, I have discovered Moso Naturals as a fantastic alternative. This product utilizes bamboo charcoal to attract odors, chemicals, and moisture from the air. According to Moso Naturals, the bamboo charcoal’s negative ionic charge draws in positively charged odors, effectively neutralizing them. (source) The best part? It lasts up to two years!
Does it truly work? I tested Moso Naturals by placing it near a common source of odor – our garbage can. I noticed a significant reduction in odor within our garbage cupboard. Of course, you must address the source of the smell first, but for any lingering scents, this product serves as an excellent backup. The bag can be rejuvenated monthly by placing it in direct sunlight outside. After its two-year lifespan, you can cut open the bag and sprinkle the contents in your garden to promote plant growth, making it a sustainable option!
