Hamburg, October 27, 2022 – Beiersdorf AG has successfully continued its upward trajectory in the third quarter of 2022, overcoming a challenging market landscape. Group revenues surged to €6.7 billion during the first nine months of the year, reflecting an impressive organic growth of +11.1% year-over-year. The Consumer Business Segment showcased strong performance with organic sales growth of 11.7%, contributing to a total of €5.4 billion. Growth was widespread, with all regions and brands playing a key role. The tesa Business Segment also reported notable advancements, achieving sales of €1.3 billion and an organic growth rate of 8.3%.
Vincent Warnery, CEO of Beiersdorf, commented: “We have sustained the strong growth momentum from the first half of the year into the third quarter, achieving widespread double-digit growth rates across our product categories. We are increasingly benefiting from our initiatives to enhance NIVEA’s global and digital presence. For the first time, our flagship brand has managed to secure market share across all product categories and regions. As we look ahead, we are adjusting our sales guidance for the full year while remaining mindful of the economic uncertainties that may affect the fourth quarter.”
Consumer Segment: Uninterrupted Growth Across Brands and Regions
The flagship brand, NIVEA, experienced an organic growth rate of 10.8% year-over-year during the first nine months of this year. This growth is attributed equally to the Personal Care and Skin Care categories. In addition to strong performances in segments such as sunscreen and deodorants, NIVEA has also excelled in face and body care products. The brand has seen significant growth across all regions, particularly in emerging markets like Latin America and India. Notably, NIVEA also recorded impressive growth in China, aligning with the broader recovery observed in Asia during the third quarter. For the first time, NIVEA has successfully increased its market share in every region and product category.
The Derma brands Eucerin and Aquaphor exhibited remarkable organic growth of 25.3% in sales and have successfully enhanced their market shares. Every region has reported double-digit growth since the beginning of the year, indicating that the Derma segment has significantly outperformed overall market growth in the first nine months. The robust online business and exceptional performance in North and Latin America have been driving this growth substantially. Furthermore, Eucerin’s expansion into the Polish market marks a significant entry into one of Eastern Europe’s largest dermocosmetics markets.
The luxury brand La Prairie reported organic sales growth of 5.5% during the first nine months. This increase was bolstered by a strong third quarter, where La Prairie rebounded from lockdown-related restrictions experienced in the earlier half of the year. Notably, the brand’s exceptional performance in China and growth in the travel retail sector were significant contributors to its success.
In the Healthcare sector, primarily encompassing the plaster brands Hansaplast and Elastoplast, organic sales rose by 12.8% in the first nine months. This growth has further solidified the brands’ market leadership. All regions have played a part in this upward trend.
tesa: Leading Growth in Industry Division
The tesa segment achieved an organic growth rate of 8.3% compared to a strong previous year during the first nine months. Positive exchange rate and structural effects have notably enhanced the growth rate by 3.5 percentage points. Despite ongoing global supply chain disruptions, tesa successfully expanded in both its divisions. The Industry division, particularly the electronics sector in Asia, industrial trade, and applications for the printing industry, contributed significantly to revenue growth. Additionally, tesa has shown a remarkable recovery in its dealings with automotive manufacturers, while its Consumer segment also increased sales in both Europe and Latin America.
Revised Full-Year Guidance Estimates for Consumer and tesa Segments
In light of the robust results achieved in the third quarter and the strong business performance throughout the current fiscal year, Beiersdorf has revised its full-year sales expectations for both the Consumer and tesa Business Segments. However, macroeconomic and geopolitical challenges, coupled with ongoing price negotiations with retailers, introduce a degree of uncertainty into the business outlook, which is reflected in the estimates outlined below. Assuming continuous strong market conditions, performance is anticipated to fall at the higher end of the range.
Within the Consumer Business Segment, Beiersdorf is forecasting organic sales growth of 9 to 10%. The company is making significant strides in pricing strategies, enhancing product mix, and advancing efficiency initiatives. Consequently, they reaffirm their guidance for a slight year-over-year increase in EBIT margin from ongoing operations (excluding special factors) in the Consumer Business Segment.
Due to the substantial sales increase seen in the third quarter, Beiersdorf now anticipates organic sales growth of 7 to 9% for the entirety of 2022 for tesa. Thus, the EBIT margin from ongoing operations (excluding special factors) is expected to be only marginally below last year’s figures, despite elevated raw material and transportation costs.
The Group is projecting sales growth of 9 to 10% for 2022. The consolidated EBIT margin from ongoing operations (excluding special factors) is anticipated to remain at the previous year’s level.
