We all understand that choosing eco-friendly products is essential for the health of our planet. Supporting sustainable brands isn’t just a trend; it’s a crucial step towards ensuring a better future. As awareness of climate change grows, so does the understanding that our consumption patterns significantly contribute to greenhouse gas emissions and pollution. Therefore, embracing practices like recycling and striving for overall sustainability is not only wise but necessary.
But what does it truly mean to embrace eco-conscious living? If you’re feeling overwhelmed by climate anxiety and unsure of where to start in your quest for a sustainable lifestyle, there’s no need to worry. Every small effort counts. You can begin by opting for the best sustainable fashion brands instead of damaging fast fashion. Switch to reusable straws and eco-friendly water bottles to minimize plastic waste, and replace those plastic grocery bags with durable, reusable totes.
Understanding the Meaning of “Eco-Friendly” for Companies
The term “eco-friendly” simply signifies that a product or company is designed not to harm the environment. Brands that prioritize sustainability actively monitor their carbon footprint and implement strategies to conserve vital resources like water and energy. These companies often focus on creating reusable products, which significantly reduce the environmental damage caused by single-use items that ultimately end up in landfills.
The Critical Importance of Eco-Friendly Practices in Business
According to Craig Dubitsky, founder of Hello Products, eco-friendly companies consider the environmental impact of their products throughout the entire lifecycle—from manufacturing to distribution and usage. “Eco-friendly companies strive to ensure their offerings benefit their users while minimizing any potentially harmful effects on our environment,” he notes. This commitment is vital, especially since we have only one planet. Addressing issues like climate change is essential to making the Earth livable for future generations.
Unpacking the Concept of Greenwashing
“Greenwashing” refers to falsely claiming that you are contributing positively to the planet when the reality is quite the opposite, or worse, outright deception,” explains Steven Sashen, CEO of Xero Shoes. Unfortunately, many companies misrepresent their environmental efforts. For example, some clothing brands labeled as sustainable still contribute to significant textile waste that often ends up incinerated or buried. “This is why companies must be transparent about their environmental impact, sharing their green stories only when they are genuine,” Sashen emphasizes.
The Importance of Supporting Sustainable Brands
“When both companies and consumers take responsibility for their products and carbon footprints, the planet stands a better chance,” states Matt Bertulli, CEO of Pela, a maker of sustainable accessories. He believes that sustainability impacts everyone. “Every product designed and manufactured produces carbon emissions and waste, and the reality is, there is no Planet B.”
How to Spot Eco-Friendly Brands in the Market
While it may be a stereotype, many companies producing cruelty-free products—those not tested on animals—also tend to prioritize environmental issues, according to Dubitsky. As you shop for sustainable products, familiarize yourself with logos that indicate specific certifications or provide valuable information on a product’s eco-friendliness.
When shopping, look for the following certifications:
- Leaping Bunny: Commonly found on cosmetics and personal care products, indicating cruelty-free status, this certification suggests that a company is taking steps to minimize environmental impact.
- How2Recycle: This label provides details on whether a product is recyclable.
- FSC: The Forest Stewardship Council certification shows adherence to best practices in forest conservation, ensuring that no additional trees were cut down for packaging.
- B Corp: This certification denotes a company that commits to transparency and is recognized for high social and environmental performance, often avoiding energy waste and fossil fuels during production.
- 1% for the Planet: Brands with this certification donate 1% of their annual sales to environmental initiatives.
- Climate Neutral: Companies with this certification meet specific standards for measuring and offsetting greenhouse gas emissions while actively working to reduce them.
If you’re serious about researching eco-friendly products before making a purchase, consider using the Finch browser extension, which rates products based on sustainability. “We appreciate certifications like B Corporation, Rainforest Alliance, or FSC certified,” says Finch founder Lizzie Horvitz. Apart from certifications, the extension evaluates companies’ transparency, climate footprint, water usage, waste generation, and product toxicity.
Dubitsky also recommends looking for information regarding the proportion of virgin versus recycled materials in products. For example, his brand utilizes 100% post-consumer recycled materials in its deodorant packaging, ensuring that the container had a previous life. Many sustainable brands repurpose materials like recycled ocean plastic to create new products.

Best Brand for Nut and Plant-Based Milk Alternatives
Nutr
Choosing plant-based milks is a more sustainable option compared to dairy, which significantly contributes to climate change through high greenhouse gas emissions and excessive water use. However, store-bought alternatives can be pricey, and their packaging often adds to environmental waste. Enter Nutr. This innovative machine allows you to create nut, oat, rice, and other nondairy milks in just minutes. The process is straightforward: add nuts, pour in water, choose your temperature, and blend. Nutr also offers reusable glasses, jars, and other accessories to enhance your homemade milk experience.
Pros:
- Nutr plants one tree for every machine sold.
- Helps reduce waste by making single portions.
- Compact design saves counter space.
Con:
- Produces only one portion at a time, making it less suitable for preparing multiple servings.
