Inspiration Behind the Innovative Tamanu Balm
The creation of our Tamanu Balm is a heartfelt story of compassion and innovation. The spark of this idea ignited when our Founder, Susie, learned about a scar on the face of one of our Ambassadors, a result of a car accident in her youth. Inspired by her struggle, Susie set out on a mission to develop a product that would facilitate skin repair and minimize the visibility of scars. Thus began an extensive search for potent plant-based ingredients that could transform skin health and restore confidence.
Harnessing Nature’s Power: The Tamanu Tree’s Secrets
The Tamanu tree, indigenous to the breathtaking islands of French Polynesia, the South Pacific, and the Indian Ocean, is a remarkable evergreen that holds the key to skin rejuvenation. This extraordinary tree blooms with small, fragrant white flowers, which give way to fleshy fruits resembling apricots. Hidden within these fruits lies the tamanu nut, the source of our skin-saving miracle. When this nut is pressed, it yields Tamanu oil, treasured by Pacific and Polynesian communities for centuries, earning its moniker ‘green gold’ due to its extensive skin-enhancing properties.
This nutrient-rich oil boasts a plethora of benefits, including exceptional anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antibiotic characteristics, making it a powerhouse for skin health. Furthermore, it promotes the generation of new skin tissue, serving as a natural remedy for various skin issues, such as burns, insect bites, stretch marks, and dry skin. Its regenerative qualities align perfectly with Susie’s vision, effectively aiding in the reduction of scar appearance and enhancing overall skin vitality.
Crafting Perfection: The Science Behind Tamanu Balm
In the lab, Susie embarked on an exciting journey to perfect the formulation of our Tamanu Balm. Initially, she expressed concerns regarding the oil’s green hue and distinct herbal aroma. However, these characteristics ultimately became defining features of this uniquely Tropic product. We made a conscious decision to source our tamanu oil sustainably from Madagascar, a region renowned for its rich biodiversity and effective tropical ingredients.
Each tamanu nut is hand-harvested, air-dried with care, and meticulously pressed to extract the highest quality oil. To enhance the balm’s efficacy, Susie incorporated additional ingredients such as raspberry and blackcurrant seed oils, known for their powerful antioxidant properties that protect against environmental stressors. The inclusion of shea and cupuaçu butters serves to soothe the skin, promoting a smoother and more supple texture. The final product not only diminishes visible scarring but also provides relief for minor scrapes and pesky insect bites.
Crafting a Timeless Product: A Commitment to Quality and Care
Once the formulation met Susie’s high standards, it was time for in-house production to commence, leading to the launch of our Tamanu Balm. Both the mini and full-sized versions became part of the Tropic family in 2014, and they continue to be freshly made and poured at our Tropic HQ to this day. Each batch is meticulously crafted to ensure optimal freshness.
The production process involves hand-pouring the balm into pots, a meticulous procedure that requires heating the mixture with special heat plates until it reaches a liquid state. Using a funnel, the balm is carefully poured into containers and left to cool, solidifying back into its soothing, balmy texture. While this might seem intricate, it’s the best way to guarantee that our ingredients remain fresh and potent, ensuring the balm is easy to apply and delivers exceptional results. Like all our products, our Tamanu Balm is truly a labour of love.
