Our community, over the years, has poured trillions of our hard-earned dollars into the beauty industry. The very industry that traditionally has never cared about our unique beauty needs. But money talks and many brands were forced to address the need for variety in shades and undertones.
The “The Black Beauty Effect” docu-series, which will premiere this fall exclusively on the Black Experience on Xfinity channel, will closely examine the social change, past and present, within the beauty industry, through the lens of the successful Black women who have led the charge. The three-part series is created and executive produced by Andrea Lewis (Degrassi: The Next Generation), Cj Faison (Giants & Junebug), Jackie Aina, Kahlana Barfield Brown, and Keesha Boyd of Comcast.
The docuseries will delve into the current evolution, revolution, and disruption taking place within the beauty industry including interviews with Black beauty influencers, celebrities, and entrepreneurs who have taken up the torch passed down from their pioneering predecessors.
Each hour-long episode, directed by Kwanza Nicole Gooden, examines a different aspect of beauty – hair, skin, and makeup – through the lens of some of the beauty industry’s most iconic game-changers and peels back the glossy public relations that shape the industry to show the ugly truths that plague the beauty industry.

The series creator Andrea Lewis describes “The Black Beauty Effect” as one of her dream projects. Lewis grew up in the heart of the entertainment industry, sitting in so many makeup chairs that she lost count. It was experiencing the good, bad, and ugly that inspired her to take mental notes. She understood by watching the impact in the beauty industry, celebrity makeup artists, Black beauty editors, and countless beauty content creators that she had more than enough material for a doc-series.
They say that it takes a village to raise a child, the same can be said for developing entertainment projects that speak to our community. So when Keesha Boyd, executive director, Multicultural Video & Entertainment, Xfinity Consumer Services, and executive producer, saw what Lewis and FaceForward Productions created the answer to bring their vision to the world was a resounding — yes.
