If you don’t possess all the Renée Rouleau products I recommend, there’s no need to worry! My daily skincare routine involves exclusively using products from my line, with the exception of a prescription retinoid and some tools such as NuFace and a gua sha tool. However, I understand that not everyone will have the exact items I use. You can substitute with whichever products you have available that are most similar to my recommendations. Choosing the appropriate strength of retinol, retinoid, tretinoin, or other forms of vitamin A to use during the 7-day challenge should be tailored to your unique skin type and prior experience with these ingredients. If you’re new to retinol, it’s wise to start with beginner-friendly products to minimize the risk of dryness and irritation. However, if you’re already experienced with retinol and eager for a more impactful transformation, I encourage you to choose the strongest retinol that aligns with your comfort level. Keep in mind, the more potent the retinol, the more prominent and visible the results!
Understanding Potential Side Effects of Retinol Use
It’s crucial to recognize that utilizing retinol or any vitamin A products can bring about side effects such as sensitivity, dryness, and flaking. These reactions are considered normal as your skin’s barrier is temporarily compromised during this challenge (especially between days 4-6, when the retinol begins to take effect). Should these side effects become overwhelming at any point, feel free to customize the routine to better suit your skin’s needs.
The Role of Moisturizer: Why It’s Optional on Certain Nights
Throughout the challenge, you may notice that I sometimes list moisturizer as an optional step. This is due to a practice known as “product sandwiching.” For those who are new to or have sensitive skin concerning active ingredients like vitamin A, applying a layer of moisturizer both before and after your vitamin A application can create a protective barrier. This technique helps dilute the strength of vitamin A, thereby reducing potential side effects. However, if you prefer to experience the full potency of vitamin A, including its peeling effects that can significantly enhance collagen production, you might choose to skip the moisturizer. This allows vitamin A to penetrate deeper into the skin, which may result in more pronounced visible outcomes.
Is It Possible to Repeat the 7-Day Challenge?
The great news for those who enjoy a good challenge is that you can absolutely repeat it! I encourage you to take on this 7-day challenge whenever your skin is in need of an additional boost.
Here’s a helpful tip: To optimize the benefits and allow your skin ample time to recuperate, I suggest waiting 2-3 weeks between each challenge. This period will enable your skin to fully recover and ensure you reap the maximum benefits from each round.

While it’s ideal to adhere to each step for optimal results, don’t stress too much if you occasionally miss one.
