Insights from the Noses

Alberto Morillas:
“If you actively train your nose, you will become adept at distinguishing between the main olfactory families. Everyone possesses their own olfactory memory, akin to a personal ‘library of scents’ comprising the aromas you associate with people, places, travels, objects, food, and significant moments in your life. You can enrich this library by exploring fragrances in stores or trying them on your skin to experience them fully.
Some scents are fresher while others are more sensual; strive to articulate what you smell to define the different sensations accurately. Then, practice consistently. Engage in blind smelling exercises, allowing spontaneity to guide you; express everything you feel and jot down your thoughts freely.
Over time, you’ll develop your own references and categorize fragrances into main themes, such as woody, aromatic, citrus, and ambrée. Memory is crucial. You must repeatedly smell the same item, then mix it with others to observe how it evolves.
Consider it akin to cooking—you need to taste continuously to refine your palate, and the same principle applies to your sense of smell. I cannot emphasize enough how vital memory is, as memorizing the essence of a fragrance and its personal significance is essential for growth.”

Cécile Zarokian:
“Enhancing your olfactory skills often starts with simply paying attention. Focus on the scents around you. Many people notice a smell but struggle to articulate their experience; acquiring the right vocabulary is essential.”
