Understanding the Benefits of Face Taping
Face taping involves the application of adhesive tape on the face—usually overnight or before applying makeup—aimed at lifting the skin, minimizing the visibility of wrinkles, or training facial muscles to maintain a specific position. Sounds fantastic, right?
Professional makeup artists have long utilized the technique of strong tape to create a more youthful appearance for their clients. This method is referred to as ‘instant lifting taping’ and, as the name suggests, provides an immediate lift to the face, which can be discreetly hidden by a wig or applied behind the ears.
The type of face taping that I personally prefer is overnight taping.
The primary objective of overnight taping is to gradually smooth out fine lines and wrinkles by restricting facial movements throughout the night. There’s nothing quite like waking up feeling rejuvenated and looking refreshed as well!
While face taping is not a permanent solution, it is a non-invasive method that offers an immediate, albeit temporary, remedy for fine lines and wrinkles. Although injectables like Botox may be more effective for deeper wrinkles and offer longer-lasting results, they also come with potential side effects.
- Frownies – Popular paper-based precut facial patches designed to smooth wrinkles while you sleep.
- SiO Beauty Patches – Medical-grade silicone patches that hydrate while smoothing out fine lines.
- Face lift tape (non-stretch) – Gentle adhesive tapes created specifically for wrinkle-prone areas like the forehead, eyes, and mouth.
- Kinesiology Tape (Face-specific) – This tape can be cut into face-appropriate shapes and used overnight to prevent wrinkles from forming.

Exploring Face Taping Techniques: Anti-Wrinkle vs Instant Lifting
1. Anti-Wrinkle Taping: A Preventative Approach
The goal of this approach is akin to that of Botox – to relax facial muscles and diminish the visibility of dynamic wrinkles caused by repetitive facial movements.
How It Works:
- The tape is applied to areas prone to wrinkles—such as the forehead, around the eyes, or mouth.
- It restricts facial muscle movement during sleep.
- This technique aims to help prevent facial expressions that contribute to deepening fine lines over time.
- Some tapes, like silicone patches, also provide hydration and smooth the skin beneath.
2. Instant Lifting Taping: For Immediate Results
This technique aims to create a temporary facelift effect for a more youthful appearance—primarily utilized by makeup artists for red carpet events, photo shoots, theatrical performances, and similar occasions.
How It Works:
- Elastic or strong adhesive tape is employed to pull and secure the skin in the desired position.
- This tape is usually concealed by placing it behind the ears, under wigs, or within hair.
- This method lifts sagging skin and can tighten jawlines and enhance cheekbones.
My Personal Favorite Face Tape
I absolutely adore using Radiance Rebel’s Face Tape! They offer three different types tailored to various skin needs, all made from high-quality Japanese Cotton. Use code: GGG for 10% off your purchase. Their guide is incredibly helpful and provides step-by-step instructions on how to effectively apply face tape.
Beginner- This option is ideal for those just starting with face taping, especially those with sensitive or mature skin. It is also suitable for individuals with thin skin.
Intermediate- This variety is perfect for all skin types and features a 98/2 cotton blend.
Advanced- This version is only suitable for resilient skin, featuring a 40% stretch and a strong adhesive.
Step-by-Step Guide to Effective Face Taping

Step 1 – Prepare Your Face
Begin with a clean, dry face. It’s essential to avoid using heavy moisturizers or oils at this stage.
Step 2 – Adjust the Adhesive Strength
Press and release the tape on the back of your hand to lessen its stickiness. This precaution helps prevent irritation, particularly for sensitive skin types.

Step 3 – Application of Face Tape
Carefully press the pre-cut pieces of tape onto the targeted areas of your face – such as the forehead, eyes, and mouth. If you’re not using pre-cut tape, ensure that you cut the tape into specific shapes that match your facial contours. My preferred face tape is from Radiance Rebel. I started with the beginner tape and have since progressed to the advanced option. Enjoy a 10% discount using code: GGG. I also purchased her comprehensive guide that provides detailed instructions on how to face tape if you need additional help.
For the forehead: use horizontal strips.
For smile lines and around the eyes: use curved strips.
For the jawline and cheeks: utilize lifting shapes.
When removing the tape, do so gently and in the direction of hair growth to minimize any tugging on the skin.

Step 5 – Cleanse Your Skin
After removing the tape, apply any soothing skincare products as needed.
Step 6 – Incorporate into Your Routine 4-5 Times a Week

Transformative Outcomes: Face Taping Before and After

The most significant improvement I have witnessed from long-term use of face tape is in the appearance of my forehead lines, which is understandable since that’s the only area I’ve consistently targeted. It’s the area that currently concerns me the most regarding fine lines. I should really expand its application to my expression lines, but I have not done so yet. Since incorporating face tape into my routine, my fine lines have become considerably less pronounced. I also enjoy the ritual of removing the face tape in the morning and admiring how smooth my forehead appears. I tend to face tape nearly every night, usually skipping one or two nights each week. The process is straightforward, making it a manageable addition to your skincare regimen compared to other methods of aging gracefully.
