“He must increase, but I must decrease. [He must grow more pominent; I must grow less so.]These are the words of John the Baptist. What he is saying that more Jesus be seen and less of himself being seen.
Albert WT Orsborn, the 6th General of The Salvation Army had the same idea when he penned these words in the chorus “Let the Beauty of Jesus”.
Let the beauty of Jesus be seen in me.
All His wonderful passion and purity; O, Thou Spirit divine, All my nature refine Till the beauty of Jesus be seen in me.
This should be our constant prayer that more of Jesus be seen in our lives. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus stated that very same idea. Matthew 5:16 “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.”
The light here is Jesus in each believer. Jesus is simply saying that a believer should and must let Him shine out of their lives. This light will produce good works which will in turn glorify the Father. The more light that shines out of the believer , the more good works that will be produced.
Shouldn’t we pray each day that the beauty of Jesus be seen in us? Shouldn’t we also pray that less of us be seen and more of Him? What would happen if we as believers made this our prayer and practice? Think about ! What would happen?
