The rainwater releases micro-organisms known as geosmins that have been hidden within the soil, mingling with the scents of plant oils and ozone. Together, these elements create the enchanting fragrance we associate with petrichor.
Petrichor carries an aroma that feels like the earth is sharing an ancient secret. This scent has captivated people for centuries, drawing humanity to it, yet only in recent times have scientists begun to explore its origins. The term ‘petrichor’ was first introduced by scientists Isabel Joy Bear and Richard Thomas in 1964 during their field study titled The Nature of Argillaceous Odour, while they were observing cattle.
They noted that cattle seemed to respond strongly to the aroma of fresh rainfall, often following the scent to find sources of drinking water. Intrigued, Bear and Thomas delved deeper into the origins of these odour-releasing geosmins. They derived the name ‘petrichor’ from the Greek words petra (meaning stone or rock) and ichor (referring to the divine fluid in the veins of the gods in Ancient Greek mythology).
Harold McGee, the acclaimed author of the olfactory masterpiece Nose Dive: A Field Guide to the World’s Smells, elaborates on the chemical processes behind petrichor in relatable terms. He explains that it consists of a layer of volatiles emitted by various sources, including microbes, fungi, plants, animals, humans, and our technologies, which accumulate on mineral surfaces. According to McGee, the volatiles are often too sparse to notice but become perceptible when rain drives them into the air in greater concentrations.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, perfumers have long been fascinated by this atmospheric scent. For centuries, distillers in Kannauj, the perfume capital of India, have been capturing the essence of monsoon rains through an extract from wet clay known as mitti attar or gill attar. This rich, earthy fragrance encapsulates the spirit of the rain-soaked earth.
