In the latest edition of The Scented Letter magazine, titled ‘Fashion, Fragrance & the Future’ [sign up for the FREE online edition here], we delve into the transformative role of Artificial Intelligence in the realm of perfumery. This issue uncovers how AI empowers perfumers to craft innovative scent compositions that were previously unimaginable. It also focuses on the creation of new aroma molecules, predicts their olfactory characteristics, and promotes sustainable practices in growing, harvesting, distilling, and formulating fragrances. Moreover, we discuss the implications of AI in the design and marketing strategies of perfumes, illustrating its comprehensive influence in the fragrance industry.
As the AI market continues its rapid expansion, we are excited to highlight another remarkable application of AI in perfumery: assisting YOU in selecting your next fragrance. This innovative approach not only streamlines the often overwhelming fragrance selection process but also enhances your overall shopping experience.
For years, we have championed the integration of technology in helping customers navigate the often bewildering world of fragrance selection. Decades ago, our Co-Founder Lorna McKay pioneered an in-store computer system at Liberty’s perfumery, designed to assist customers in finding their ideal scents. This innovative concept, which produced printed suggestions, was ahead of its time. The Perfume Society subsequently enhanced this idea and transformed it into our online tool, the Find a Fragrance helper, providing even greater accessibility and user-friendliness.
Eager to explore the latest advancements in fragrance technology, I was fortunate enough to receive an invitation from renowned Scent Futurist and consultant, Olivia Jezler, to attend the inaugural European demonstration of an AI system developed by Japan’s SCENTMATIC Corporation. In essence, they describe their system as follows:
“Finding a perfume can be challenging. Fragrances are complex, and articulating our preferences can be difficult. KAORIUM by SCENTMATIC offers a groundbreaking approach to fragrance discovery that demystifies the intricate world of scents. It allows individuals to explore new fragrances intuitively through language. Utilizing cutting-edge technology, our mission is to create delightful olfactory experiences.”
This innovative AI technology is already implemented in select niche perfumeries across Japan. The interactive system operates via a table display, guiding customers through the fragrance selection process. Users are encouraged to sample various scents based on their emotions or desired experiences, starting with initial scent options for ‘blind sniffing’—smelling without prior knowledge of the name, brand, or ingredients. By asking tailored questions, the AI narrows down choices and presents three unique scented suggestions from different fragrance houses, all customized to align with the retailer’s offerings.
“KAORIUM represents a unique and innovative AI system that digitizes the sense of smell, allowing customers to engage with fragrances through a digitally guided blind-smelling experience. With KAORIUM, individuals can intuitively discover scents through a structured AI-driven olfactory adventure, culminating in a poetic revelation of their chosen fragrances.”
