Important Safety Information and Approved Uses of BOTOX® Cosmetic
BOTOX® Cosmetic can lead to serious side effects that may be life-threatening. Seek immediate medical assistance if you encounter any of the following issues at any time (hours to weeks) following the injection of BOTOX® Cosmetic:
- Severe difficulties swallowing, speaking, or breathing, which can occur due to muscle weakening and may be fatal. The risk is significantly higher if such issues pre-exist before injection. Swallowing difficulties might persist for several months.
- Spread of toxin effects. The effects of botulinum toxin may extend beyond the injection site, causing serious symptoms such as: loss of muscle strength and overall weakness, double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, hoarseness or changes in voice, difficulty articulating words clearly, loss of bladder control, breathing difficulties, and issues with swallowing.
It is important to note that BOTOX® Cosmetic dosing units are distinct from and not comparable to any other botulinum toxin product.
No confirmed serious cases of toxin spread have been documented when BOTOX® Cosmetic was administered at the recommended doses for frown lines, crow’s feet, and/or forehead lines.
BOTOX® Cosmetic may cause loss of strength or overall muscle weakness, vision issues, or dizziness within hours to weeks after administration. In such cases, avoid driving, operating machinery, or engaging in other hazardous activities.
Serious and immediate allergic reactions can occur. Symptoms may include: itching, rash, red itchy welts, wheezing, asthma symptoms, or dizziness. Seek medical help immediately if you experience wheezing, asthma-like symptoms, or feel faint.
Do not undergo treatment with BOTOX® Cosmetic if you: are allergic to any of its components (refer to the Medication Guide for specific ingredients); have a history of allergic reactions to other botulinum toxin products like Myobloc® (rimabotulinumtoxinB), Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA), or Xeomin® (incobotulinumtoxinA); or have an active skin infection at the intended injection site.
Inform your doctor about all muscle or nerve conditions you may have, such as ALS or Lou Gehrig’s disease, myasthenia gravis, or Lambert-Eaton syndrome, as these conditions may increase the risk of severe side effects, including difficulties with swallowing and breathing following typical doses of BOTOX® Cosmetic.
Communicate all your medical conditions to your doctor, including planned surgeries; previous facial surgeries; difficulties raising your eyebrows; drooping eyelids; any abnormal facial changes; pregnancy or plans to become pregnant (the effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic on unborn babies are unknown); and breastfeeding status (it is unknown whether BOTOX® Cosmetic passes into breast milk).
Notify your doctor about every medication you are taking, including prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements. The combination of BOTOX® Cosmetic with certain other medications may lead to significant side effects. Do not start any new medications without informing your doctor that you have received BOTOX® Cosmetic in the past.
Inform your doctor if you have received any other botulinum toxin product within the last four months; have previously received injections of products like Myobloc®, Dysport®, or Xeomin®; have recently received an injectable antibiotic; are taking muscle relaxants; allergy or cold medications; sleep aids; or blood thinners.
Additional side effects of BOTOX® Cosmetic may include: dry mouth; pain or discomfort at the injection site; fatigue; headache; neck pain; and visual disturbances such as double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, and swollen eyelids.
