‘The French Garden’ is an exciting new collection comprising six unique fragrances from L’Officine Universelle Buly. Each scent artfully combines vegetable notes with floral and musky undertones, evoking a sense of morning dew freshness. This launch coincided with the release of our garden-themed edition of the magazine in 2023, titled The Perfumer’s Garden. The pandemic has heightened our appreciation for gardens and green spaces, emphasizing their importance for our mental health and creativity.

Buly’s co-founder, Victoire de Taillac, beautifully expresses this sentiment: ‘A garden is like a perfect universe, a paradise, a haven… Gardening means immersing oneself in nature, awakening all senses. The fragrances surprise and delight.’ Among the delightful combinations are Indian Cucumber and Syrian mint, which deliver a ‘crazy minty joy’ wrapped in a musky cloak, while Iraqi Beetroot and Egyptian Rhubarb ground the experience with earthy patchouli. Additionally, the trendy note du jour of geranium adds a refreshing touch to Watercress & Sardinian Parsley.

Fragrance notes like rhubarb, carrot, and cucumber have long been utilized by perfumers, while other ingredients may initially seem unusual, such as sweet potato, yet they blend perfectly into these fragrances. Each scent is expertly crafted to create a near photo-realistic experience upon first sniff, seamlessly melding with your skin to transform into exquisite perfumes. The inspiration for this project stemmed from a unique antique seed box that Buly’s co-founder, Ramdane Touhami, acquired at an auction. Although his attempt to grow the historical seeds did not bear fruit, it sparked the idea of creating fragrances that reflect the love for gardens and green spaces, particularly during the lockdown. These scents become a form of aromatic escapism with every spritz.

“Les Jardins Français” revives an intoxicating and unique array of garden fragrances. Each scent evokes the essence of a morning stroll through a vegetable garden and orchard, amidst rows of plants that were cultivated over centuries by diligent monks, meticulous collectors, and knowledgeable healers, all of whom were masterful gardeners and gatherers.
