In London to launch his haircare line JVN Hair, author, activist, podcaster, presenter, and comedian Jonathan Van Ness is adding ‘brand founder’ to his list of achievements.
Before he was the joy-sparking grooming expert on Netflix’s beloved Queer Eye series, Van Ness spent decades working as a hairstylist in New York and Los Angeles. On Queer EyeVan Ness’ makeovers come with practical advice that makes maintenance easy, long after the cameras are off. His subjects leave the salon chair looking very much like themselves, only neater, fresher and a touch more polished.
JVN Hair follows the same ethos of embracing and caring for your locks no matter the texture. Products are categorised into concerns rather than hair types — Nuture for hydration, Undamage for strengthening and Embody for volume — and each one contains the signature, sugar cane-derived ingredient hemisqualane.

“Hemisqualane is half the molecule of squalane. It’s tiny, so it penetrates the hair shafts without weighing it down. It gives you gorgeous slip, immediate shine, instant strength and it makes the hair better over time,” explains Van Ness.
GH beauty director Eve Cameron is already a fan of the punchy-coloured products (all in glass or aluminium for ease of recycling).
“The Undamaged shampoo and conditioner left my wavy, coloured hair extraordinarily shiny – so much so that colleagues noticed. It was like walking around with a ring light.”

1) Show your scalp some love

Just like the skin on your face, your scalp will benefit from a clarifying treatment. “When the hair follicles are clogged, new hair can’t get through. The turmeric and rosemary extracts in the Pre-Wash Scalp Oil help to decongest,” says Van Ness. It also contains bisabolol to soothe any irritation or itching while hemisqualane prevents further breakage.
2. Nourish as you swim
A regular at the pool? A good conditioner and swim cap goes a long way in protecting and treating your strands. “Hair is like a sponge: if you wet it with water from the shower, put on a conditioner and a swim cap, then it’s harder for chlorine and pool water to get in,” explains Van Ness. Once you’re out, wash with a gentle deep-cleansing shampoo to get rid of grime.
3. Niacinamide isn’t just for skin

Niacinamide is a mainstay in skincare for its hydrating, brightening and smoothing properties. In the Instant Recovery Serum, niacinamide’s reparative properties help to fortify fragile strands and minimise split ends. This creamy formula works on all hair types and can also be used as an overnight treatment. “I’ll apply and put my hair up in a loose bun or braids. It absorbs quickly and is anything but greasy,” says Van Ness.
4. Bounce and shine

According to Van Ness, grey hair has more cuticle layers than pigmented hair, which is why it can feel coarse or wiry. Alongside a hydrating shampoo and conditioner, he recommends incorporating a moisturising mask 2-3 times a week to keep the lengths soft and supple. It’s a good tip for heat and colour-treated hair as well.
“I try to use a mask once a week as I think it really makes a positive difference to the condition of hair,” says GH beauty director Eve Cameron. “The Hydrate Deep Moisture Mask is lovely, with a pudding-y – but I liked it – vanilla meets sandalwood meets lemon and blackcurrant scent.”
5. Try washing less

“Think of hair like fabric. There’s a lot more wear and tear if you wash and blow dry it daily,” says Van Ness. He recommends washing at most every other day. If you work out and get sweaty, try his hair misting technique .
“Put your hair up while you shower. Once you’re out, take a spray bottle and a wide tooth comb or a Wet Brush to detangle. Put a small amount of Instant Recovery Serum on your mid-lengths and ends for heat protection and blow dry the natural oils on your scalp into your hair.” This will also make your hair feel less greasy over time, as your scalp isn’t overcompensating for the moisture loss.
