Just like the products we put on our skin, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to haircare. So, when it comes to your daily hair routine, it’s important to remember that not every formula works for everyone, as each individual hair type has different needs.

You don’t need a dozen products and tools to get the hair you want, so keep it simple with the essentials – for example, a good shampoo and conditioner that’s free from nasties like parabens, alcohol and dyes.

The TRESemmé collection of salon quality formulas is a great place to start. Whether you want to provide intense hydration to dry hair, breathe new life into dull strands, help keep your colour vibrant, build volume, deep clean or even repair damaged hair, the range works with your unique hair type to help you champion your personal style .

Next, determine your hair type. “Generally, people think of the structure of the hair such as straight, wavy, curly or coily, which is actually the shape of the strand,” says Sydney-based hair stylist Cara Clyne.

“What we really want to know is someone’s hair condition so that we can find the best suited product for them. We still call this ‘hair type’ but we are focusing on the concerns more.”

It’s important to understand if your hair is dry or damaged, frizzy, oily, thin, or colour-treated hair so that you can find the right solutions for it. If you’re unsure what category your tresses fall into, and what to do with them, read on to discover your hair type and how to get the most out of it.

    Dry and damaged hair

You have dry and damaged hair if it feels dry to touch, is straw-like on the ends or you have lots of split ends.

For dry, dull hair, incorporating hydrating products will provide the protection you need to lock in that important moisture. Gently cleanse and moisturise with shampoo and conditioner containing vitamin E and jojoba oil to deliver intense moisturisation.

Damaged hair requires a strengthening hair system to repair strands, prevent breakage, and seal in nourishment; reinforcing it against colouring, styling and heat exposure – so ensure you always use a heat protection spray too.

    Frizzy Hair

You have frizzy hair if it’s prone to static, it dislikes moisture and gets bigger on a warm day, or your hairstyles don’t last on rainy days.

You can start by controlling frizz in the shower. Opt for a shampoo and conditioner containing vitamin A and sunflower seed oil that works to tame unruly hair as you wash. Or, try a lightweight leave-in conditioner to retain smoothness after a wash.

The more textured your hair is, the less you need to wash it. Aim for every three days for curly hair, and once a week if your hair is coily.

    Oily Hair

You have oily hair if it feels oily to touch only one day after shampoo, looks flat if you haven’t washed it in two days, or looks shiny near the roots.

A daily wash might feel necessary for those with oily hair, but using the right shampoo can help nix that constant grease, boost the flatness that is often a result of oily roots, and give your hair a deep cleanse without drying it out (which can actually cause more oil production).

In addition to your regular wash with shampoo and conditioner containing multi-vitamins and grape seed oil, such as TRESemmé Clean and Replenishdry shampoo applied to the roots will work to keep oiliness at bay and revitalise your locks.

    Thin or fine hair

You have thin or fine hair if you struggle to get volume and lift, or it generally looks flat. But this can be remedied if you know what to do with it.

When it comes to fine hair, strands are typically smaller and less porous than those of thicker hair. This means they tend to get greasy fast as oil tends to build up and become more noticeable.

Hair like this needs to be washed more regularly. Choose a lightweight shampoo and conditioner with coconut oil to provide lift and add volume.
