Many people harbor myths and misconceptions about skincare products, including how long they take to yield visible results, the ideal number of products for an effective routine, and which ingredients are truly beneficial. With a wealth of information available online, choosing the most suitable products for your unique skin type can become a complicated and overwhelming task. This confusion can lead to frustration, as individuals aim for the best possible results while navigating an array of options.
At Tropic, our mission is to demystify skincare by focusing on a natural ingredient that can address almost every skin concern: Tamanu Balm. This versatile product is designed to adapt to your individual needs, making it easier for you to achieve your skincare goals.
To gain insight into public perceptions of skincare, we conducted a survey involving 2,000 Brits. This study examined their routines, habits, and common mistakes, debunking prevalent myths and demonstrating that effective skincare can be straightforward and accessible.
Understanding Brits’ Perspectives on Skincare and Skin Confidence
Survey results indicate that over half of Brits (54%) feel self-conscious about the appearance of their skin. This insecurity is disproportionately felt by women, with only 30% expressing confidence in their skin compared to 39% of men. This disparity underscores the societal pressures women face regarding their skin’s appearance and the importance of addressing these concerns.
Furthermore, generational insights reveal that 35% of individuals in Gen X regret not starting their skincare routines sooner, showcasing a growing awareness and recognition of the significance of skincare as individuals mature. This trend highlights the need for comprehensive skincare education across all age groups to promote healthy practices and boost confidence.
Exploring Skincare Routines and Spending Habits Across the UK
The UK skincare industry is flourishing, with more than two million Brits investing over £500 each year to maintain their skincare routines. Despite this significant financial commitment, many individuals, particularly in Gen Z, cite time constraints as a major barrier to adhering to consistent skincare practices. An astonishing 40% of Gen Z participants reported feeling ‘too busy’ to maintain a regular routine, indicating a need for simplified solutions.
Realistic Expectations: 1 in 3 Brits Seek Quick Results from New Products
When trying new skincare products, patience can be a rare virtue; 1 in 3 (31%) Brits expect to see visible results within a week. However, experts caution that some products may require more time to deliver their benefits. Women, in particular, find the skincare market overwhelming, with 29% feeling confused by the plethora of available options.
Key factors influencing Brits’ choices in skincare products include price, hydration, SPF protection, anti-aging properties, and natural ingredients. A significant 54% prioritize affordability when selecting products. Social media also plays a crucial role, as 31% of millennials have made purchases based on trends popularized on TikTok.
Moisturisers Reign Supreme: The Most Utilized Skincare Product
Moisturiser stands out as the cornerstone of most skincare routines, with 59% of individuals using it daily, followed by cleansers (33%) and SPF products (24%). Among millennials, retinoids have gained considerable popularity, with 20% reporting daily usage. Despite the wide array of skincare products available, the average person spends only £11-£49 annually, indicating a demand for effective yet budget-friendly solutions.

Adapting Summer Skincare Habits for Seasonal Challenges
During the summer months, many individuals, particularly 27% of Gen Z, face the common issue of razor bumps, prompting experts to recommend effective creams for relief. The warmer season also brings various skin challenges, including dry skin (34%), dehydrated lips (28%), sunburn (22%), heat rash (19%), and mosquito bites (19%), which are frequently reported among women.
Interestingly, residents of Aberystwyth report the highest struggles with dry skin and sunburn, with 50% admitting to difficulties with both during the summer. Meanwhile, over a third (36%) of Glaswegians experience dehydrated lips, and Coventry residents report heat rash at a rate of 30%. Furthermore, Norwich locals are particularly affected by mosquito bites, with more than a quarter (28%) feeling their sting.
Alarmingly, 1 in 3 Brits Skimp on Sunscreen During Sunbathing
Despite a growing awareness of skin health, 34% of Brits fail to apply SPF daily, with 44% of women admitting to neglecting this essential step in their skincare routine. This alarming trend poses serious risks, especially since 32% of the population admits to sunbathing without sunscreen, potentially endangering over 21 million individuals to severe sunburn this summer.
Identifying Common Skincare Mistakes and Misunderstandings
A significant number of Gen Z individuals (37%) lack awareness regarding the expiration dates of skincare products, which can compromise the efficacy and safety of their routines. Additionally, 37% of women confess to neglecting makeup removal at the end of the day, a habit that can lead to various skin issues. Furthermore, a misconception persists about the necessity of SPF indoors, with only 5% acknowledging its critical importance.
Men also lag behind in adopting a skincare routine, as 22% admit to neglecting it entirely, compared to just 7% of women who do the same.
Among Gen Z, common skincare blunders include failing to moisturize (40%), ignoring product expiration dates (37%), skipping daily SPF (37%), sunbathing without protection (30%), and not researching product ingredients (27%). These findings emphasize the urgent need for enhanced skincare education and better habits among younger generations.
