Why is This Product a Must-Have? The Essence is an innovative 3-in-1 skincare solution that functions as a gentle exfoliant, toner, and essence. Its unique formulation features PHA gluconolactone, a larger molecule that delicately exfoliates the skin without irritation. A standout aspect of all Augustinus Bader products is the inclusion of the patented TFC8 (Trigger Factor Complex), which is a blend of amino acids, high-grade vitamins, and synthesized molecules that naturally occur in the body. This complex not only nourishes and protects the skin but also empowers it to utilize its innate renewal abilities, often yielding visible results within just 27 days, which coincidentally aligns with the skin’s natural cell turnover cycle!
In addition to its main ingredients, The Essence contains phytic acid to further enhance cell turnover and boost collagen production, along with salicylic acid for effective blemish control. Its gentle formulation makes it suitable for daily use, ensuring a radiant glow. However, I found that incorporating a bit of extra exfoliation once a week helped me keep whiteheads at bay. The Essence has a straightforward, clear, and unscented liquid texture that integrates seamlessly with any skincare regimen, absorbing swiftly into the skin without causing pilling from subsequent products. For those new to the brand, it’s an excellent entry point, even if I personally find The Cream to be more iconic.
Every Augustinus Bader product exudes luxury, and The Essence is no exception. Its stunning packaging features a regal blue glass bottle that evokes the beauty of a starry night, complemented by a weighty copper-colored cap, symbolizing the antimicrobial properties of copper. The elegantly designed logo atop the cap is a modern interpretation of the healing star, further enhancing its luxurious presence on your bathroom counter.

Unveiling The Retinol Serum*
What Sets The Retinol Serum Apart? The Retinol Serum is elegantly packaged in a sleek aluminum “Nomad” bottle with a rounded bottom, featuring a copper-colored base that allows the bottle to stand upright. While the design is intriguing, I’m still uncovering the reasoning behind the rounded shape! This serum boasts pure retinol blended into a rich shea butter base, along with the renowned TFC8. It is designed to visibly reduce the appearance of deep lines and wrinkles while also optimizing the skin’s microbiome, minimizing blemishes, and ensuring moisture retention.

INGREDIENTS: Aqua/Water/Eau, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Glycerin, Octyldodecanol, C12-16 Alcohols, Squalane, Propanediol, Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter, Ectoin, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Hybrid Oil, Palmitic Acid, Myristyl Alcohol, PCA, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Xanthan Gum, Potassium Sorbate, Carbomer, Sodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Sodium Benzoate, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Tocopherol, Citric Acid, Zinc PCA, Maltodextrin, Retinol, Hydrolyzed Rice Protein, Panthenol, Totarol, Leptospermum Scoparium Branch/Leaf Oil, Niacinamide, Sodium Hydroxide, Calcium Pantothenate, Sodium Starch Octenylsuccinate, Magnolia Officinalis Bark Extract, Piper Nigrum (Pepper) Seed Extract, Tocopheryl Acetate, Camellia Sinensis Leaf Extract, Polygonum Cuspidatum Root Extract, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, Pyridoxine HCl, Alanyl Glutamine, Arginine, Oligopeptide-177, Phenylalanine, Sisymbrium Irio Seed Oil, Sodium Chloride, Silica
One of the most delightful aspects of this product is its creamy texture, which feels luxurious and moisturizing. It allows me to layer it with a sheet mask and still apply a moisturizer on top without any overwhelming heaviness. I should mention that the Augustinus Bader website features a video demonstrating the application technique that employs facial massage. While it might seem like an oil, I believe that one pump is sufficient—though considering the price, I’m cautious about using more!

Final Thoughts on The Essence and The Retinol Serum: My assessment of these products is quite straightforward—both delivered excellent results! The Retinol Serum, in particular, stood out to me as it significantly improved the texture and luminosity of my skin. However, I do have some reservations regarding the rounded design of the bottle and its need for a separate stand. From the opulent packaging to the luxurious experience, Augustinus Bader truly embodies “luxurious science.” As for the future, I’m uncertain whether I would repurchase The Retinol Serum upon finishing this bottle, as I’m still exploring various options in my skincare journey and want to keep experimenting. Additionally, the price point raises some questions for me, especially since I haven’t yet explored other potentially more affordable retinol alternatives. Nonetheless, I’ve undoubtedly been spoiled by the quality of this product! On the other hand, I would happily buy The Essence again due to its multi-functional benefits. At $125, it’s a reasonable investment considering its efficacy, exquisite packaging, and the minimal amount required to achieve noticeable results. My curiosity about Augustinus Bader remains, and I’m particularly intrigued by the legendary The Cream and the brand’s haircare line!
