Overwatch 2<em> </em>is only a month away from releasing, and once it does, the original <em>Overwatch </em>will be retired. Fortunately, gamers will be able to carry over all their cosmetics to the sequel, holding onto their inventories of fancy skins. However, it is unclear what Blizzard plans to do with the existing skins in the sequel, as they could be added as unlockable outfits or become paid cosmetics that are bought with Overwatch 2‘s virtual currency.
Even though Blizzard recently ran a three-part Anniversary event that allowed players to unlock a vast majority of Overwatch cosmetics, it would be great to see one final event that allows players to get rare skins with ease. In fact, Blizzard should make this final event a massive fire sale, allowing gamers to collect even the rarest skins for some low prices. If treated properly, it could be used as a celebration, a bittersweet goodbye, and a personal thank you from the developers.
How an Overwatch Fire Sale Could Work
For starters, an Overwatch Fire Sale would need to set itself apart from the recent Anniversary Remix events. After all, the third and final Volume of Anniversary Remix only ended recently, and these events already allowed players to unlock almost every skin from years’ worth of Overwatch events. However, a few cosmetics remained off limits during the Remixes, and Blizzard should change that if it delivers something like a Fire Sale.
A Fire Sale event could see Blizzard opening the Overwatch League Legendary Vault once again, allowing players to purchase every Legendary outfit that was made available over the years. These previously vaulted cosmetics could cost half the usual amount of Overwatch League tokens, pushing players to buy more than one outfit so that they can kit out all their favorite heroes. The Pink Mercy skin could even return alongside Blizzcon skins, giving players one last shot to unlock every cosmetic ever released for the hero shooter and pick up some particularly rare cosmetics.
Blizzard could provide double the Loot Box rewards for playing in the arcade, allowing players to gather skins (and credits) at a faster pace. Similarly, the usual 25 credit bonus could be boosted to 50, with players able to gather a lot of currency so that they could buy all the skins they ever wanted. Blizzard could even cut the prices of Legendary skins to 500 credits for the final days of the original Overwatchpushing everyone to hop on and pay their respects to the first game. Other items like sprays, emotes, and victory poses could get similar discounts.
One final bonus in this hypothetical Fire Sale event for Overwatch could see Blizzard allowing players to choose any one skin from the game that they would like, unlocking it for free. This could include Overwatch League outfits and Hero Challenge skins, giving players the entire lineup to choose from. One skin of a player’s choosing could be an excellent thank you on Blizzard’s end, giving those who paid to support Overwatch something special before it goes free-to-play.
Ultimately, it is highly unlikely that this kind of Overwatch event will take place, as there is only one month left until the sequel enters Early Access. Still, with September being an empty month for Blizzard and the Overwatch community as a whole, perhaps one last surprise is possible. If a Fire Sale for cosmetics were to occur, Overwatch could go out with a bang instead of a whimper, giving fans a positive final moment with the game and letting Overwatch‘s servers become more populated than they have been for some time.
