I absolutely adore green juices. My journey into the world of juicing began over twenty years ago while I was a medical student, coinciding with my transition to a vegetarian lifestyle. To streamline my morning routine, I make it a point to keep a well-stocked supply of prepped fruits and vegetables ready to go, eliminating the need to start from scratch each morning. I typically enjoy freshly made juice about three times a week, and I distinctly feel an energizing boost on those days. My green juice predominantly features a variety of vegetables, complemented by a splash of lemon and a hint of carrot or apple to soften the intense green flavor. Using a masticating juicer ensures that the nutrients remain intact without heat or enzymatic damage. With my experience, I consider myself an advanced juicer, well-versed in the art of extracting delicious and nutritious green goodness.
During an early trip to Los Angeles while launching Osmia, I discovered Beverly Hills Juice, and it was a transformative experience. This quaint little shop, originating in 1975 (when I was just two years old), remains a beloved destination in LA for raw, vibrant juices. They have a unique take on green juice, featuring a delightful blend they call Banana Manna, which consists of frozen bananas mixed with almonds, sunflower seeds, or cacao. This enchanting mixture can be combined with any of their juices, resulting in a shake that strikes a perfect balance—thicker than juice yet lighter than a smoothie. As I savored this unbelievably delicious and healthy treat outside the shop, I resolved to learn how to create this delightful concoction at home, allowing me to enjoy it without the need for a plane ticket to LA. Here’s how you can make your own version of Beverly Hills Juice:
1) Prepare the Creamy Banana Base
This initial step should be completed by the night before you plan to juice. I typically prepare a substantial batch, which only requires about two sessions per month. I prefer using raw, organic sunflower seeds for their rich flavor, protein content, and the creamy texture they add, although raw almonds can serve as a suitable alternative as well. Sunflower seeds are packed with Vitamin E, magnesium, selenium, and essential B vitamins. They provide approximately 7 grams of protein per 1/4 cup and are low in carbohydrates, containing healthy fats that benefit your body.
Now, a quick note: I am a proud owner of a Vitamix blender, and I truly believe it’s the best tool for this recipe. My love for my Vitamix is unwavering—other blenders simply can’t compare in my eyes. If you’re using a different blender, I can’t guarantee the same results, but just know that my Vitamix reigns supreme. Despite my blender loyalty, I still appreciate you and your choice of kitchen appliances!
Begin by combining 7-8 ripe bananas with just under 2 cups of raw sunflower seeds, blending them together until you achieve a smooth, creamy paste that might remind you of less savory concoctions. Spoon this delightful mixture into ziplock bags or silicone freezer trays, portioning about 1/4 cup per serving. Remove excess air from the bags, seal them tightly, and either roll them into fat banana cigars or cover the silicone mold before placing them in the freezer. This creamy banana base will stay fresh for at least 1-2 months in the freezer, ready for your juicing adventures.
2) Craft Your Own Green Juice
In reality, I don’t often adhere to strict recipes when it comes to my green juice. As I mentioned, I prioritize using a variety of greens above all else, and I always add a generous knob of ginger for an extra kick.
- Keep a bag of peeled carrots, washed celery, and sliced apples ready in your refrigerator. Create a second bag for softer ingredients like peeled lemons and quartered cucumbers. Ensure that your kale and romaine lettuce are washed and prepped for juicing.
- Plan to make your juice quickly and efficiently, as those vital green juice enzymes are most potent when consumed within 15 minutes of juicing! However, if you prefer to save it for a post-workout refreshment or a mid-afternoon snack, rest assured it will still be incredibly fresh and nourishing.
- If you crave a recipe, consider this delightful combination: 4 stalks of celery, 1 large cucumber, 10 pieces of kale, 1 lemon, 1 knob of ginger, half a bunch of parsley, and either 2 carrots or one apple.
3) Blend the Magic Together
Don’t forget about your frozen banana creation! Combine your freshly juiced green concoction with one serving of this creamy banana mixture in your Vitamix or your preferred blender. Blend until smooth for a luxurious texture. Take your time sipping this nutritious beverage, cherishing each ginger-infused sip, and take pride in the fact that you’ve just done something amazing for your health. Your efforts are commendable!
One important note: this is not a low-calorie diet food. It contains calories and healthy fats, so it’s essential to complement it with regular physical activity, whether that means walking, running, hiking, dancing, or practicing yoga, ideally five to six days a week. This juice serves as a nutritional supplement to a balanced and active lifestyle. It’s perfect for providing energy before a challenging yoga class (to avoid fainting) or as a recovery drink after a run. Packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, it’s a fantastic addition to a raw food cleanse. Just remember, it’s only a part of a larger health plan. You get the idea!
If you find yourself in LA, make it a priority to visit Beverly Hills Juice and order a green juice with their signature Banana Manna. Until then, I hope this guide helps you embark on a joyful and healthy juicing journey of your own.
Sending much love and health your way,
