Hello friends! I’m excited to share a personal update regarding my propylactic double mastectomy. It has now been over a year since I underwent this preventative surgical procedure. My initial surgeries took place at the end of July 2023, during which I had all my breast tissue surgically removed. I then had a second round of surgeries at the end of January 2024, and I am currently in the recovery phase from that experience. Each day brings new challenges as I work towards discovering my new normal and embracing life after surgery.

Surprising Changes: My Experience with Food Sensitivities
In 2024, I encountered some unexpected challenges, including a sudden inability to consume garlic, onions, and tomatoes. This abrupt change led to full body inflammation, which ultimately resulted in one of my implants flipping, a situation I would not wish on anyone due to its discomfort and strangeness. Additionally, I made the decision to quit alcohol in March, suspecting that it was contributing negatively to my body’s inflammatory response. These adjustments have been significant, and I am learning to navigate this new landscape of dietary restrictions.
To aid in my recovery, I have partnered with a licensed dietitian to focus on healing my gut health. We conducted a GI mapping test, which revealed that some beneficial bacteria levels were too low while harmful bacteria were excessively high. As a result, I have begun taking targeted supplements and modifying my diet to restore balance to my gut flora. Although this healing process is gradual, I’m thrilled to report that as of October, I’ve regained the ability to enjoy some tomatoes and onions without adverse effects.
Currently, I strive to maintain an anti-inflammatory diet to promote overall wellness and recovery.
Top Picks for Comfortable Wire-Free Bras Post-Surgery
Following my surgeries, my doctors advised me to avoid bras with underwire, which has made finding comfortable and stylish alternatives a bit challenging. I want to share some of my favorite wire-free bras that are both functional and chic, steering clear of any designs that feel too matronly.
One of my go-to choices is the Bare Necessities The Wire-Free Front-Close Bra, which I own in several colors, including Black, Festival Fuchsia, Delicacy, and Hazel. This bra offers exceptional comfort and pairs beautifully with my low-cut tops, providing the support I need without sacrificing style.
Another staple in my wardrobe is the Feelingirl Smooth Seamless Comfort Wireless Bra, which I have in pink, black, and beige. This bra is incredibly comfortable and ideal for t-shirts, making it perfect for casual outings and walks. It has quickly become a must-have in my collection.
I also recommend the Amoena Lymph Flow Long Wire Free Front Closure Bra, which I own in both white and black. I wish this bra came in more vibrant colors like hot pink! I rely on these during yoga sessions, workouts, and while sleeping to ensure that my breasts are properly supported and to prevent any shifting of the implants.
Finally, the Sunzel Seamless Ribbed Crop Ruffled Camis are incredibly cozy. I have them in an array of colors, including hot pink, lavender, black, white, red, teal, sprout green, and splash blue. While they are ultra-comfortable for lounging, they provide just enough coverage for wearing under sheer or button-up shirts. However, they may not offer substantial support for high-intensity workouts.
Empowering Reflections on My Journey Through Mastectomy
Facing the challenges of propylactic double mastectomy surgeries has been a daunting experience, yet I carry no regrets about my decision. I feel a profound sense of gratitude for having eliminated a 40% risk of developing breast cancer through my proactive choice to undergo preventative surgery. While the reconstruction surgeries have been intense and demanding on my body, I have committed myself to a rigorous yoga practice, dedicating over 20 hours a week to regain my strength and stamina.
With a year ahead of me, I am eager to see how my fitness goals evolve. The past year has been incredibly challenging, but I have refused to give up on myself and my journey towards health and well-being.
