Embracing a new fragrance can often feel like a challenging endeavor. Our first impressions of unfamiliar scents can be surprisingly intense, causing us to overlook fragrances that don’t immediately align with our olfactory preferences. It’s crucial to remember that our reactions can be deceiving, and what initially seems off-putting may reveal its beauty over time.
This is particularly relevant when a fragrance interacts with our skin, blending with our unique body chemistry and evolving in unexpected ways. The challenge arises from our natural inclination to retreat to familiar scents, avoiding the unfamiliar. However, if we grant ourselves the necessary time and space, we may discover a world rich in olfactory delights waiting to be explored.

Master the Art of Testing New Fragrances Effectively
Your fragrance preferences evolve over time, much like your taste in food—affected by factors such as weather, diet, mood, and even hormonal changes. Therefore, it’s essential to take your time when exploring a new scent that lies outside your usual comfort zone.
Start by spraying the fragrance on a blotter and revisit it at hourly intervals. Document your initial impressions, then re-evaluate a few days or weeks later to gauge any changes in perception.
Many perfumers undergo extensive training, often longer than that of a heart surgeon, memorizing scents by associating them with personal memories and vivid images that arise unbidden.
Describing scents can be challenging, as smell lacks a distinct language. If you find it difficult to articulate a fragrance, consider comparing it to textures (is it velvety, suede-like, crisp like cotton, or silky?). You may also find musical analogies helpful (which instruments come to mind? Does it evoke a fast-paced rhythm or a slow melody?). Alternatively, envision a specific location—what is the air temperature and surrounding scenery it conjures?
Your nose can adapt to familiar scents, so avoid wearing the same fragrance daily. Experiment with layering to awaken your senses, or venture into exciting new discoveries!
Like all artists, perfumers have their unique style. If you find yourself enamored with one particular scent (and we predict you will), take the time to research the perfumer online; you may be surprised by the other creations that resonate with you.
Keep in mind that scent molecules are volatile and evaporate at various rates. Citrus notes are the lightest and typically found in top notes, evaporating quickly; floral notes reside in the heart, while base notes are heavier, often woody or resinous. Extend the longevity of these stages by using matching or unscented body lotion, and consider spraying fragrance in your hair or onto fabric (testing first on a tissue, of course!)
If unsure, try spraying on a scarf instead of your skin: this allows for a later sniff test! Spraying on fabric (or hair) helps the scent last longer, as the molecules don’t warm up and evaporate as quickly as they would on skin. Additionally…
Utilize an unscented or complementary body lotion or oil. Fragrance typically doesn’t last long on dry skin or in hot climates. It adheres much better to moisturized skin—so hydrate first, then apply your fragrance.
Fragrance samples are the ultimate way to explore new options, allowing you to dive deeply into a new fragrance house you’ve never tried or perhaps a different scent family than your usual preference.
