From a young age, Moe Khalaf’s fascination with fragrance was ignited by his first encounter with the iconic Calvin Klein scent of Obsession. He recalls, ‘I managed to get my hands on a bottle that I kept hidden,’ he smiles, ‘and would spray small spritzes just to enjoy the scent. The allure of amber, vanilla, and spicy notes became an addiction for me.’ This early love for fragrance was remarkable, especially considering he grew up in a home where scents were avoided due to his father’s allergies. ‘Fragrances were not something we could casually use,’ he reflects, ‘but this limitation only deepened my passion for exploring the world of scents and their emotional connections.’

Before embarking on his fragrant journey, Moe initially ventured into the gourmet food industry, where he honed his creative skills. ‘The “creator” within me blossomed while I worked for a fine-foods company, where I developed a line of gourmet capers and sun-dried tomatoes,’ Moe explains. His passion for creation was reignited during his time at Esteé Lauder Companies, where he was tasked with creating a fragrance brand relevant to the region they managed. ‘It felt like my true calling, but my plans to immigrate to Canada led to an unexpected early exit from the project,’ he recalls, leaving a lingering desire to return to the world of fragrance.

Despite the challenges he faced, the allure of the fragrance world was too strong to ignore. Moe felt a persistent pull to honor his cultural heritage through perfumery. ‘I decided to continue this journey that I deeply enjoyed, which ultimately laid the foundation for crafting Kajal Perfumes,’ he states. This decision marked the beginning of a remarkable venture, intertwining his love for scent with his cultural roots, resulting in a brand that resonates with authenticity and respect for tradition.

It was this deep-rooted desire to connect his creations with cultural significance that led to the establishment of Kajal Perfumes. Yet, the true power of this flower lies in its intoxicating scent, which symbolizes strength and projection. “My childhood memories of jasmine are inseparably linked to my grandmother – calling out to me to run into the gardens at dawn to pick figs from the tree in our farmhouse. I remember navigating through chamomile, thistles, and dandelions to reach the tree. I would climb to the top branches to harvest the juiciest figs, all while being careful not to get the white sap on my skin. The most cherished part was picking the jasmine flowers afterward, filling my bowl so the figs were barely visible.
