Discover the All-New Sunlit Seduction Eyeshadow Palette
Pat McGrath Sunlit Seduction Mothership Eyeshadow Palette ($128.00 for 0.68 oz.) is a noteworthy addition to the acclaimed Mothership collection. This palette includes an exciting combination of three matte eyeshadows, three standard shimmer shades, and four unique “special” shades. The special shades are characterized by their high-sparkle, shinier, and flakier textures, offering a chunkier yet impactful finish that distinguishes them from previous Blitz/Astral formulas (which featured a domed design). This formulation is similar to the one found in the Moonlit Seduction palette, promising versatility and vibrance.
It’s essential to note that the special shades could benefit from a distinct naming convention, as they differ significantly from the Blitz/Astral formulas from earlier collections. While the unique textures provide exciting new looks, they also tend to be more prone to fallout. To achieve the best results, applying these shades with a damp brush or alongside an adhesive spray or tacky base is recommended. This technique helps minimize fallout and enhances color adherence and durability. Personally, I found that the brand’s new eyeshadow primer did not significantly improve fallout control or adherence, as it seemed better suited for traditional eyeshadows without the same level of stickiness.
From my experience, I encountered challenges with the shades blending seamlessly; the three matte colors tended to blend into one another, and the shimmer shades lacked enough differentiation. Therefore, I believe this palette is more suited for those who prefer to work with one or two shades at a time or for individuals looking to complement it with other palettes.

In-Depth Formula Overview
$25.00/0.04 oz. – $625.00 Per Ounce
The eyeshadows from Pat McGrath are renowned for being “super-saturated” with “creamy, soft textures” that offer “extreme blendability and adherence without creasing.” Although the performance can vary depending on the types of shades used, most of the eyeshadows adhere closely to these claims.
Single eyeshadows were initially launched by the brand in March 2019, and they have maintained a consistent level of quality, appearance, and feel. Unfortunately, the shades are not removable, necessitating depotting similar to any other single eyeshadow. I attempted to use tweezers to lift multiple shades, but was unsuccessful. The lids are secured by a relatively weak magnet, which makes me question their overall security compared to other single eyeshadow compacts in my collection; while a magnet does draw the lid down when it is within 2mm of the base, it lacks a strong closure.
The matte shades are velvety, easily blendable, and densely pigmented without feeling thick or heavy. They can range from semi-opaque to opaque, meaning a little product goes a long way, especially with the deeper and richer hues. Satin and pearl finishes are smooth and slightly creamy, providing firm yet easy application with good pigmentation and blendability. The more metallic finishes tend to be creamy and soft, with little to no powderiness. For optimal results, the sparkly or glittery shades are typically applied wet for enhanced coverage and intensity, which matches my experience. Most shades last between eight and nine hours without fading.

Exhaustive Formula Overview
$25.00/0.04 oz. – $625.00 Per Ounce
Pat McGrath’s eyeshadows are generally designed to be “super-saturated” with “creamy, soft textures” and offer “extreme blendability and adherence without creasing.” Performance varies based on the shade types, but overall, they align closely with these claims.
The brand introduced single eyeshadows in March 2019, and they have remained consistent in quality, appearance, and feel. Unfortunately, the shades are not designed for removal, requiring depotting like any other single eyeshadow; I attempted to lift several shades using tweezers but was unsuccessful. The lids feature a weak magnet, raising concerns about their security compared to most single eyeshadow compacts in my collection. A magnet does pull the lid down if it’s within 2mm of the base, but I wish it were more secure.
The matte shades are soft, velvety, and blendable, maintaining density without being overly thick. They range from semi-opaque to opaque, allowing for rich application where a small amount is sufficient for deeper hues. Satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer but not overly dense, offering good pigmentation and blendability. The metallic finishes tend to be softer and creamy without powderiness. For the sparkly/glittery shades, I’ve found that applying them wet provides richer coverage and intensity, which mirrors my experience. Most shades last between eight and nine hours.

In-Depth Formula Overview
$25.00/0.04 oz. – $625.00 Per Ounce
Pat McGrath’s eyeshadows are typically designed to be “super-saturated” with “creamy, soft textures” that offer “extreme blendability and adherence without creasing.” While the performance may vary depending on the shade types, they largely deliver on these promises.
The brand released single eyeshadows in March 2019, and the shades have remained consistent in quality, look, and feel. Unfortunately, they are not removable, which means depotting is necessary, much like any other single eyeshadow. I attempted to lift several shades using tweezers, but it was ineffective. The lids are held closed by a weak magnet, which raises concerns about their security compared to other single eyeshadow compacts in my collection; I wish the closure was more robust, but a magnet does pull the lid down if it’s within 2mm of the base.
The matte shades are velvety, blendable, and dense without being too heavy, providing semi-opaque to opaque pigmentation where a little can go a long way with the deeper hues. The satin and pearl finishes are smooth, lightly creamy, and firmer while still being easy to apply with good pigmentation and blendability. The metallic finishes are typically softer and creamy, free from powderiness. The sparkly or glittery shades are often designed to be applied wet for richer coverage and intensity, which has been my experience. Most shades maintain their vibrancy for eight to nine hours.
